Tala (music) A tala is a regular, repeating rhythmic phrase, particularly as rendered on a percussive instrument with an ebb and flow of various intonations represented as a theka, a sequence of drum-syllables or bol. Indian classical music, both northern and southern, has complex, all-embracing rules for the elaboration of possible patterns and each such pattern has its own name, though in practice a few talas are very common while others are rare. The most common instrument for keeping rhythm in Hindustani music is the tabla, while in Carnatic music it is the mridangam (also transliterated as mridang).
Radio Drum To create the next-generation Radio Drum. Note that ultimately it might not be a "Radio" Drum. The technology might end up being different. It must be a 3-dimensional controller that "doubles" as a drum. The Black Page The Chacarera is a groove from northeast Argentina, especially Santiago del Estero. It was originally played with an instrument called the Bombo leguero that is made of wood and leather and is between 13 to 18 inches in diameter. In Europe and the USA this kind of rhythm was made popular by Argentinean guitar player Athaulpa Yupanqui. Radio Drum The Radio Drum is an analyzer of gestural data. It is a three- dimensional controller, a sort of computerized musical drum. Invented in the late 1980’s, the Radio Drum uses the “jeu de jacquet” or “Backgammon” form of capacitive sensing to interpret the gestures of a performer. The drumsticks or mallets transmit a radio frequency that is detected by the drum surface. Each drumstick operates at a different frequency.
Drum Notation Guide Measures & Bar Lines Music is written on a music staff, which features five parallel horizontal lines. The first thing you’ll see written on the staff is the clef; the drum/percussion clef looks like a vertical rectangle and is used with non-pitched percussion instruments. With non-pitched percussion instruments like a drum set, notes written on different spaces and lines indicate that drum, bass drum, or cymbal. Drum Tuning Tips From The Famous Drum Doctor If you’re doing a session in Los Angeles and you want your drums to instantly sound great, then your first call is to the Drum Doctors to either rent a fantastic sounding kit, or have your kit tuned. Ross Garfield is the “Drum Doctor” and you’ve heard his drum sounds on platinum recordings from Bruce Springsteen, Rod Stewart, Metallica, Dwight Yokum, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters, Lenny Kravitiz, Michael Jackson and many, many more. Ross was kind enough to sit down for an interview when I wrote The Recording Engineer’s Handbook, but I’ve featured some of his tips in other books as well including The Drum Recording Handbook, The Touring Musician’s Handbook, and The Music Producer’s Handbook. So, I like to think his tips are worth sharing!
The First Ever Interactive Digital Drumming Magazine Carpal Tunnel Relief for Musicians Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition in which there is pressure on the median nerve—the nerve in the wrist that supplies feeling and movement to parts of the hand. If you play your instrument for many hours per day without adequate breaks and/or stretching, you may one day find yourself afflicted with carpal tunnel syndrome. In his book, The Bassist’s Guide to Injury Management, Prevention, and Better Health, Chicago-based chiropractor, Randall Kertz, D.C., discusses the condition in depth. Making Music asked Kertz to shed some light on the symptoms, treatments, and preventive measures. Though he’s a bass player himself, and his title suggests that it might be specific to that instrument, Kertz designed the guide to point out problems that any musician may encounter. What are the Causes of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
