Light Light's Sublime Levitating Lamps

Light Light's Sublime Levitating Lamps
Posted by Ray | 30 Sep 2011 | Comments (9) Designer Angela Jansen of Design Academy Eindhoven recently collaborated with engineer Ger Jansen on a pair of skeuomorphic LED lamps that they're currently selling as Light Light. Their website knowingly notes that "It is uncommon for engineers to find good domestic applications for their technology... and it is likewise rare for designers of consumer objects to embrace cutting-edge technology wholeheartedly." Which, of course, is "perhaps what makes the cross-pollination of ideas between Angela Jansen and Ger Jansen so remarkable." The Light Light series creates an incredible visual conversation piece. It is like an optical illusion, yet one that is kind to the eyes and easy on the mind. Bombastic copy aside, the products speak for themselves. Some assembly required (illustrated below, not above): In short, Light Light is (the first?) Again, per the designers: "...this handcrafted lamp can be dimmed but never ignored. More videos here.

Cool Finds: Perfectly Pint-Sized Play Kitchens My daughter loves to help me in the kitchen. She’s always up on the counter, whisking eggs, handing me utensils and is so interested in everything I’m doing. Last year for Christmas, I got her a play kitchen — bright red and retro. I love seeing her mimic my actions as we cook along together. Fascinating Lamps by Calabarte Calabarte is the pseudonym of a Polish artist named Przemek Krawczynski, whose art takes on a peculiar but incredibly beautiful form: cool lamps. The name itself is a portmanteau of two words – art (obviously), and calabash, the fruit that carries his imagination. The calabash is a bottle gourd originating in India, although Calabarte gets his supply from Senegal. Due to ancient domestication and usage, the bottle gourd has an incredibly tough outer shell. In the past, the gourd’s usage was defined mostly as a water container, due to having a tough, smooth shell with an ergonomic shape for handling, and natural buoyancy on water. Nevertheless, it’s edible both raw and cooked, and used in various cuisines.

Cradle Chair: Big Basket Seat Rocks Adults Gently to Sleep There is no escaping those innate and early-learned associations – for some, it means sleeping to gentle noises on planes, and for others, the act of rocking tilts us softly into a deep slumber. Richard Clarkson and company wanted to create a kind of low-tech, sensory-deprivation, sofa-style seat where one can curl up and forget the workaday worries of ordinary life … and perhaps even doze over before you notice you are slowly falling asleep. While there is art and craft in this object, there is science that went into its design as well. Specifically, research into autistic children and those who suffer from RMD (rhythmic moving disorder) played a crucial role in the shape and structure of the result. For all its theoretical complexity, the final form looks quite simple (and extremely comfortable).
