JOHN GREEN: Make gifts for people

JOHN GREEN: Make gifts for people
John and his brother, Hank, are the Vlogbrothers. They helped pioneer video blogging when they communicated only through YouTube videos for a year. They’ve since produced a wide variety of video series and have attracted a devoted army of fans known as the Nerdfighters. I discovered John Green when a reader sent me the link to the awesome Crash Course World History series, which Green hosts and co-writes. The series tells the entire history of civilisation in over forty, very entertaining 10-minute videos. I was totally addicted to it and I highly recommend it. This quote is taken from a 2009 Vlogbrothers video. RELATED COMICS: Advice for Beginners by Ira Glass. – Green’s official website. – DFTBA!

The Best Open Source Multimedia Software: Video & Audio Editors, 3D Rendering, etc. It used to be that “open source” was synonymous with “low quality” but that’s not the case anymore, particularly for audio applications. Many media professionals routinely turn open source tools in their daily work and some get by exclusively with open source. Whether it’s audio, video, 3D rendering or still photography there is a world of open source applications you can explore for the cost of a few minutes of your time and a download. Thanks to community involvement, many of these tools are available on multiple operating systems. Very handy for people like myself who may work on different operating systems and like having the option of using the same interface across all my platforms.

The Glacier Waterfalls I think there’s nothing more beautiful than seeing a tons of melted ice cascading into sea. Those awesome pictures are taken near Spitsbergen, the largest and only permanently populated island of the Svalbard archipelago in Norway. The pictures has been taken by Keenpress Photography and they are big refreshment to see in those hot summer days. Svalbard represents the northernmost part of Norway, located about midway between mainland Norway and the North Pole. Pensioner in China discovers six human heads in suitcase floating on park lake According to Chinese media, a 68-year-old woman in the city of Bengbu made a somewhat gruesome discovery on Saturday last week when she opened a suitcase floating on a park lake to discover six human heads. Could there be any explanation for such a stomach-churning find besides murder and horrific gangland killings? As it turns out, quite possibly!

AndroCloud: Frictionless CloudApp Management The management and movement of files is one of the key elements of any digitally-attuned worker’s day. Whether it’s a fundamental image to a website, or a contract-winning Keynote, it is a regular occurrence that we need to make a file accessible to co-workers and to a range of different (usually mobile) devices. This need drives a lucrative industry, which is, unsurprisingly, filled with both giants and smaller, niche services. New Research Indicates the Pyramids Weren’t Built the Way You Were Taught Like many young geeks, when I was a kid I wanted to be an archaeologist–and a paleontologist–when I grew up. Nothing sounded so exciting as discovering ancient cities, unearthing forgotten cultures, and also, if I had the time, naming a dinosaur after myself. Well, I eventually found other career paths, but I still love history and am always on the lookout for neat news in archaeology. This morning, I was not disappointed. New archaeological research is changing the way we view our past.

Probes confirm Earth acts like a giant particle accelerator The narrative of the first few things put in orbit generally focuses on the space race between the US and Soviet Union. So it's often forgotten that some of the first objects put into space actually discovered something new: the Van Allen belts. These areas of high-energy particles are held in place by the Earth's magnetic fields, and they pose a radiation hazard to any people and equipment that orbit within them. Creating a $99 parallel computing machine is just as hard as it sounds Ten months ago, the chipmaker Adapteva unveiled a bold quest—to create a Raspberry Pi-sized computer that can perform the same types of tasks typically reserved for supercomputers. And... they wanted to sell it for only $99. A successful Kickstarter project raised nearly $900,000 for the so-called "Parallella," and the company got to work with a goal of shipping the first devices by February 2013 and the rest by May 2013. As so often happens, the deadlines slipped, but Adapteva has done what it set out to do. Last week, the company shipped the first 40 Parallellas and says it will ship all 6,300 computers ordered through the Kickstarter by the end of August.

Heavy Drinkers Outlive Nondrinkers, Study Finds Correction Appended: Aug. 31, 2010 One of the most contentious issues in the vast literature about alcohol consumption has been the consistent finding that those who don't drink tend to die sooner than those who do. The standard Alcoholics Anonymous explanation for this finding is that many of those who show up as abstainers in such research are actually former hard-core drunks who had already incurred health problems associated with drinking.
