Loft Tour: The Cement Factory – LoftLife Magazine – The Loftstyle Guide to Life in the City To this day, Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill’s legendary live/work complex in Barcelona, Spain remains one of, if not the most impressive examples of adaptive reuse we’ve ever seen. It all started about 35 years ago when the controversial architect discovered an abandoned cement factory comprised of over 30 silos, underground galleries and huge engine rooms. He bought it and began renovation. This included defining the space by demolishing certain structures, cleaning cement, exposing previously concealed forms, and planting various greenery including eucalyptus, palms, olive trees and cypresses. Today, the factory has been successfully transformed into his personal home, as well as a multitude of offices, modeling and archival laboratories, a projection room, and a huge space known as ‘The Cathedral’, which serves as a venue for subsequent exhibitions, lectures, and concerts. Badass Bridge of the Day - The Daily What Private House in Tinos photo (c) Yiorgos Kordakis There is a symbolic island, a gem with the essence of calmness and serenity in Cyclades, Greece. Its beauty is picturesque and it reminds you of all that is idealic. Located on a mountain in the old residential site of Triandros this vacation home is actually made up of two separate houses which have been brought together through a picturesque veranda. The exterior architecture coincides with the rules and balance of the typical residential islandic forms. The interior consists of 250sqm living space, from which one house has three storeys and the other just two. The living areas are given a taste of classical and historical elements to them through the lighting and accessories such as the 1930’s mirrors. Adding to this care free open space design concept is the fact that everything is apparent. yh2_Yiacouvakis Hamelin Architects Geometrie Noire, in Saint-Hyppolite, North of Montreal, Canada Saint-Hypolite is small town in the Laurentide, a scenic region used mostly as a weekend getaway for Montrealers. The house is built within a dense forest on a slight hill, bordering the opening of a small river. Through the trees, we perceive the body of the black building, divided into three blocks that get linked through glass passageways. These blocks are at split-levels from each other and are all in direct contact with the earth; three sections with their individual identity, offering intimacy from each other opening up towards the natural surroundings. The entry block, open on two levels, comprises the family’s teen quarters and family room. On the northern side of the house, a large sectioned wall, covered with bent corten steel, connects the blocks together while defining a series of covered outdoor spaces, always set against the light. Sky Garden House I think one of the reasons that many are skeptical about environmental design is because they think its terribly complex and costly. It does take a bit more effort on the front end, but it's definitely not rocket science. This architecture by Guz Architects is a wonderfully developed minimalistic design with a curvilinear flare that really brings out the organic coverings. I'm most impressed with how design facilitates the needs of the plants and shrubs located throughout the house.
