Personal and Historical Perspectives of Hans Bethe AN EVOLUTIONARY REASON TO GIVE UP Evolutionary predisposition is the analysis du jour when describing all of human behaviour. These days everything we do--from appreciate music to donate to charity--evidently boils down to our desire to lure a mate and make many babies. Now it seems a scientific study has proven an evolutionary reason for depression: Dr [Randolph] Nesse’s hypothesis is that, as pain stops you doing damaging physical things, so low mood stops you doing damaging mental ones—in particular, pursuing unreachable goals. A study published this month in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology suggests this clever idea might even be true. Carsten Wrosch from Concordia University in Montreal and Gregory Miller of the University of British Columbia studied depression in [97] teenage girls... The conclusion to this study is that mild depression is in fact a healthy response to failure. This theory on depression, however, is uniquely depressing. Picture credit: fakelvis (via Flickr)

Human Cells have Electric Fields as Powerful as Lighting Bolts -A Galaxy Insight Using newly developed voltage-sensitive nanoparticles, researchers have found that the previously unknown electric fields inside of cells are as strong, or stronger, as those produced in lightning bolts. Previously, it has only been possible to measure electric fields across cell membranes, not within the main bulk of cells, so scientists didn't even know cells had an internal electric field. This discovery is a surprising twist for cell researchers. Scientists don't know what causes these incredibly strong fields or why they' are there. But now using new nanotools, such as voltage-sensitive dyes, they can start to measure them at least. University of Michigan researchers led by chemistry professor Raoul Kopelman encapsulated voltage-sensitive dyes in polymer spheres just 30 nanometers in diameter. Kopelman has developed encapsulated voltage-sensitive dyes that aren't hydrophobic and can operate anywhere in the cell, rather than just in membranes. Posted by Rebecca Sato

Physics Flash Animations We have been increasingly using Flash animations for illustrating Physics content. This page provides access to those animations which may be of general interest. The animations will appear in a separate window. The animations are sorted by category, and the file size of each animation is included in the listing. Also included is the minimum version of the Flash player that is required; the player is available free from The categories are: In addition, I have prepared a small tutorial in using Flash to do Physics animations. LInks to versions of these animations in other languages, other links, and license information appear towards the bottom of this page. The Animations There are 99 animations listed below. Other Languages and Links These animations have been translated into Catalan, Spanish and Basque: En aquest enllaç podeu trobar la versió al català de les animacions Flash de Física.

Kirlian Energy Fields Radiation Fields - Energy Fields - Reflected Zones The human energy field is thought to contain information that relates to all the activity going on within and around the person. The human aura or light body is invisible because our eyes only respond to a band of wavelengths called the visible spectrum and as the aura lies outside of this most people are unable to see it with the naked eye. However throughout history many seers and sensitive’s have claimed to see this aura surrounding people. Slowly we are beginning to accept that spirit or vital energy is inherent in matter and that without spirit matter cannot exist. Each part of the body contains information about the whole. Kirlian electrographs are typically taken of the hands. Dr. in the body. By colourising the Kirlian image it is possible to highlight areas of significance that are not so easily identified otherwise.

What would happen if I drilled a tunnel through the center of th" Want to really get away from it all? The farthest you can travel from home (and still remain on Earth) is about 7,900 miles (12,700 kilometers) straight down, but you'll have to journey the long way round to get there: 12,450 miles (20,036 kilometers) over land and sea. Why not take a shortcut, straight down? You can get there in about 42 minutes -- that's short enough for a long lunch, assuming you can avoid Mole Men, prehistoric reptiles and underworld denizens en route. Granted, most Americans would end up in the Indian Ocean, but Chileans could dine out on authentic Chinese, and Kiwis could tuck into Spanish tapas for tea [sources: NOVA; Shegelski]. Of course, you'd be in for a rough ride. For sake of argument (and survival) let's pretend the Earth is a cold, uniform, inert ball of rock. At the Earth's surface, gravity pulls on us at 32 feet (9.8 meters) per second squared. You're still moving at a heck of a clip, though, so don't expect to stop there.

Blinded By Science Aerodynamics (Mechanics of Flight)--Science Tracer Bullet Tracer Bullet 00-3 Aerodynamics is the science that deals with the motion of air and other gaseous fluids, and with the forces acting on solid bodies when they move through gaseous fluids, or when gaseous fluids move against or around solid bodies. Therefore aerodynamics comes into play when air is flowing over airplanes, automobiles, cars, ships, buildings, and other objects. Aerodynamics also comes into play when air is flowing through ducts or other enclosed spaces such as wind tunnels, jet and rocket engines, and pipes. The movement of air can result in certain aerodynamic effects, such as heat that is generated and transferred to the surfaces of a solid body with which the air comes in contact. A specific example would be the heating up of the skin of a high-speed aerospace vehicle. Anderson, John D. Datta, Sreela. Wegener, Peter P. Anderson, John David. Anderson, John David. Scientists Prove DNA Can Be Reprogrammed by Words and Frequencies By Grazyna Fosar and Franz Bludorf THE HUMAN DNA IS A BIOLOGICAL INTERNET and superior in many aspects to the artificial one. Russian scientific research directly or indirectly explains phenomena such as clairvoyance, intuition, spontaneous and remote acts of healing, self healing, affirmation techniques, unusual light/auras around people (namely spiritual masters), mind’s influence on weather patterns and much more. In addition, there is evidence for a whole new type of medicine in which DNA can be influenced and reprogrammed by words and frequencies WITHOUT cutting out and replacing single genes. Only 10% of our DNA is being used for building proteins. It is this subset of DNA that is of interest to western researchers and is being examined and categorized. The Russian biophysicist and molecular biologist Pjotr Garjajev and his colleagues also explored the vibrational behavior of the DNA. One can simply use words and sentences of the human language!
