Partners In Health (PIH_org) Notes from the Outernet - JaredLeto.com Leto has made his entrance tonight in a black hooded coat, wielding a baseball bat; more LA drugs dealer than the politically engaged figure in an oversized bow tie he cut at the Oscars. With suitable drama, he throws off the jacket to expose the full glory of his rock Jesus look — shades, man-leggings, tunic skirt, sleeveless T-shirt — whereupon he unleashes his power-vocals on to his fans for two adrenaline-fuelled hours: jumping, grinding, sprinting and simultaneously flirting with what feels like every single member of the crowd. ‘I don’t dive into the mosh pit any more,’ he whispers to me on a break. ‘It’s the fastest way to lose your penis. The show is part full-on rock extravaganza, part interactive Leto comedy routine. It is curious, to some, that Hollywood’s man of the moment would disappear off in the vital afterglow of his Best Supporting Actor win to revel so intimately with the global masses. All this makes Leto a very busy man. ‘I have very strong self-control.

Jared Leto | The 100 Most Creative People in Business in 2012 Jared Leto's first transformation was standard fare--from starlet-dating actor to starlet-dating prog-rock-band frontman. But his second shift was more noteworthy: As he found new ways to expand his band's reach, he spun off new businesses to help other bands capitalize on their hard-core fans. "The future of music is really exciting," he says, "especially if you're interested in a proactive, innovative experience." Engagement trumps numbers His band, Thirty Seconds to Mars, once invited fans to submit photos of themselves, for a chance to be on the band's next album cover; it yielded 2,000 different fan covers. So, he launched: The Hive, which runs social-media management and digital marketing for his band and others such as Jessie J and Semi Precious Weapons. Cater to your biggest fans Leto thought that VIP experiences sounded lame but tried offering one because it was a space ripe for disruption. Court a premium audience Timeline

social media gives victim a voice With many of the official lines of communication down, user-generated content played an important role yesterday in spreading news about the Haiti earthquake. Social media partly made up for the lack of information from the affected area on what had happened and what was most needed. Twitterfeeds gave an impressive picture of the ongoing earthquake, and the Guardian's live blog on the rescue mission used social media as well as information from other news organisations. The BBC also covered the event combining tweets from the area with the work of its reporter Matthew Price in Port-au-Prince. However, the news organisation with the most material on the quake at present looks to be CNN. It has seven reporters on the ground – but is still significantly enriching their work with social media. "We immediately moved someone supervising social media and our iReports to the Haiti desk," said Nick Wrenn, vice president of CNN International Digital Services.
