Elsie's Thrift Tips

Elsie's Thrift Tips
My sister, Emma, and I started thrifting together when I got my drivers license in high school. There are several shops in our town that stay open until 9PM, so that is what we would do for fun several times a week. With absolutely no knowledge of vintage we collected dresses and accessories from the decades that we loved, the 1950s-1970s. We also collected little boys cartoon t-shirts from the 1980s and a pretty sweet collection of "hope chest" items like fondue pots and retro coffee mugs. We started thrifting because it was a way to be unique (something very important to our high-school-selves) and a way to stretch the small budget we had for clothing. Fast forward ten years and we still love thrifting. Thrifting can be overwhelming when you start out. This next tip can be a little tricky. The nature of thrifting is that you choose pieces you love from the most random assortment. Sometimes you'll find a piece that could maybe work, but you aren't sure.

What I miss from 135lbs ago…Part 3 Read part 1 here and part 2 here What’s the moral here? What’s the matter with missing 135lbs? With letting every one of them go completely and asking, gently, that they never come back? The matter is that, fat or thin, big or bitty, I’ll always be both. Each is valuable. When you’re big for twenty years, the only twenty you’ve ever known, you’ll kindly not frown upon two decades. Hear me. Beautiful. I hear accounts of those who’ve lost a tremendous amount of weight. I don’t think back on my past and want to redo it. Yes, I know now that with 135 extra pounds, something more was wrong than my weight. Some of the weight was happy and as well rounded as it came across. Some of it meant that I developed a personality first. A sense of humor before a sense of entitlement. Empathy before ego. Some of the weight meant that I didn’t care about myself. I found spirit. I cared deeply about the way people perceived me. Maybe my present is more precious. The thing is, it’s easy to find the bad.

The 25 Most Powerful Songs of the Past 25 Years by Jennifer Drapkin, Kevin O'Donnell and Ky Henderson They’re not the most beautiful songs, or the most musically important. In fact, a few could literally drive you nuts. But the following tunes—some as old as Mozart, others as current as Beyonce?—have fundamentally altered the world we live in at some point in the last quarter century. 25.
