Well, At Least There Was Good Stuff to Read: The Books of the Decade | Books Anybody remember how anxious and thrilled we were in those last months of the 20th century? When we weren't at war and we had a budget surplus and it looked like Al Gore would be president? The prospect of a 21st century filled with new technologies, new art and literature loomed large and bright. But now, as we look back at what was decidedly a shitty decade for an incredible variety of people in an equally incredible variety of ways (evictions/invasions/bombings/etc), it's surprisingly hard to be pessimistic about the books that assessed, satirized, dramatized and distracted us from the events of the past 10 years. Goethe said that the decline of a nation's literature is the precursor to that nation's fall, and with this look back at the books that defined the decade, we'd like to tell Goethe to suck it. To be clear: there were plenty of bad books over the course of the decade, as well.

Dad plays best prank ever on teenage son | Moments Of Motherhood Rain Price will never forget the first day of his sophomore year of high school. On the , packed with classmates from his suburban Utah school, Rain peered out the window, mortified. "The school bus for the first time ever came down our street this year," explains Rain's dad, Dale, to Utah's Daily Herald. "This was [my son's] first year on the bus. My wife came running in the room and suggested we go wave at him to embarrass him." And so began Dale's hazing ritual that continued every day for the rest of his son's school year. Over time, Rain's most humbling moment became his most anticipated. The father of three, a stay-at-home dad, raided the family's Halloween costume collection, borrowed outfits from neighbors, and managed to spend under $50 over the year to make his son's bus ride the highlight of the day. Soon Rain's friends weren't the only ones anticipating Dale's morning ritual. With expectations high, Dale developed a system. Related:Are teenagers too concerned with fashion?

2011 Lesson #2 : Don’t Carpe Diem Every time I’m out with my kids – this seems to happen: An older woman stops us, puts her hand over her heart and says something like, “Oh– Enjoy every moment. This time goes by so fast.” Everywhere I go, someone is telling me to seize the moment, raise my awareness, be happy, enjoy every second, etc, etc, etc. I know that this message is right and good. I think parenting young children (and old ones, I’ve heard) is a little like climbing Mount Everest. And so I think that if there were people stationed, say, every thirty feet along Mount Everest yelling to the climbers – “ARE YOU ENJOYING YOURSELF!? Now. At that particular moment, Amma had swiped a bra from the cart and arranged it over her sweater, while sucking a lollipop undoubtedly found on the ground. That’s not exactly what I wanted to say, though. There was a famous writer who, when asked if she loved writing, replied, “No. but I love having written.” I love having written. Craig is a software salesman. My point is this. Anyway.
5 Things Parents Shouldn't Say to Their Kids | Team Mom Say what? It's no secret that parents should pay attention to how they communicate with their children. Even tiger moms and parents following the French style of raising children could agree that what we say to our kids -- and how we say it -- matters. Tiger moms and French parents get the results they want largely because of what they say. But besides using words to get kids to do what they want, how moms and dads communicate with their kids directly impacts the parent-child relationship long term. And it's the simple statements parents make, usually in a moment of frustration with their young children, which can cause the most damage later on. Related: 8 things you should never say to a mom "Words hurt and they can't be taken back, so be careful" says Debbie Pincus, a therapist, parenting coach and author of "The Calm Parent: AM & PM." The bottom line is that as parents, we're teaching our kids how we want them to behave in similar situations; modeling the desired behavior is key.
10 Truths To Keep Your Relationship Healthy I think it's easy to make things more complicated than they need to be. Here are some basic rules of the relationship road that will keep you headed in the right direction 1. Successful relationships take work. They don't happen in a vacuum. They occur when the couples in them take the risk of sharing what it is that's going on in their hearts and heads. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. There are no guarantees, but couples who practice these techniques have longer and stronger relationships than those who are not proactive in their love. Dr.
Top 10 Reasons our Kids Leave Church « Marc5Solas We all know them, the kids who were raised in church. They were stars of the youth group. They maybe even sang in the praise band or led worship. And then… they graduate from High School and they leave church. What happened? It seems to happen so often that I wanted to do some digging; To talk to these kids and get some honest answers. The facts: The statistics are jaw-droppingly horrific: 70% of youth stop attending church when they graduate from High School. Half. Let that sink in. There’s no easy way to say this: The American Evangelical church has lost, is losing, and will almost certainly continue to lose OUR YOUTH. For all the talk of “our greatest resource”, “our treasure”, and the multi-million dollar Dave and Buster’s/Starbucks knockoffs we build and fill with black walls and wailing rock bands… the church has failed them.
