Stubbornness Increases the More People Tell You You’re Wrong | Wired Science By Duncan Geere, Wired UK A group of psychologists working at HP’s Social Computing Research Group has found that humans are more likely to change their minds when fewer, rather than more, people disagree with them. [partner id="wireduk" align="right"]The team conducted an experiment asking several hundred people to choose between two pieces of furniture. The results showed that a small amount of social pressure to reverse an opinion was far more effective in getting people to change their minds than if the pressure was much greater. There are two conflicting theories of social influence at work here. The psychologists believe that the first theory becomes more powerful when we’re confronted by the opinions of many others, but the latter kicks in when we’re in a smaller social group. The next step for the team is to bring quality into the equation. The full research paper is available on HP’s website. Image: HP Source: Wired.co.uk See Also:

“Photo Memories” Coming to Facebook Places? While checking into a Facebook Places location recently, one Mashable reader noticed a new tab: Photo Memories. We've been unable to duplicate the same tab ourselves, which means Facebook may be testing this feature with a small number of users first before committing to a larger roll-out. But this offering is consistent with how Facebook has presented its newest feature. At its launch, Facebook's Vice President of Product, Chris Cox, described Places as a digital repository for all your location-based memories. He described a couple's children being able to use Facebook Places data to pinpoint the spot of their parents' first kiss, for example. But a large part of how we store our memories on Facebook and on the larger web is via images and photographs. We can imagine that tagging images with a given location or uploading images of a specific location to that location's Places page would fit nicely into how Facebook has positioned Places so far.

Foursquare wins major victory with death of Facebook Places While Facebook was rolling out some changes to its privacy policies today, the company also quietly announced it was killing off the Foursquare-like Places function inside of its mobile app. The Facebook Places feature was unveiled a year ago and let users “check-in” to various locations. Many saw this as a serious threat to other social location services like Foursquare and Gowalla because Facebook has an incredible number of users. As an alternative to the Places feature, Facebook will optionally add a location to status updates or pictures. Foursquare has to be happy about this, though the company declined to say anything about the death of Places. “Far from concentrating on what others are doing, we’re 100 percent focused on continuing to build an amazing product that changes the way people experience the world around them,” a Foursquare spokesperson told VentureBeat. The New York-based Foursquare has been on a bit of a roll with a slew of announcements the past few months.

Facebook Places raises profile of check-in apps By Jon Swartz, USA TODAY SAN FRANCISCO — Are location-based mobile services going Places because of Facebook's new feature? It's been available for less than a month, but Facebook Places — which lets you share your physical location online —appears to have put trendy location-based services and check-in apps on the map, industry analysts say. With Facebook's 500 million members as its potential audience, Places could entice smartphone-wielding consumers, many of whom are unfamiliar with check-in apps, to use such services to connect with friends face-to-face, find discounts on the move and get neighborhood news. Indeed, location services may prove to be the most "social" of social-networking services, says Sam Altman, CEO of leading vendor Loopt. For now, Facebook says it isn't monetizing Places, which lets you "check in" and provides information about millions of businesses via an iPhone app or a website (touch.facebook.com). 7 Ways to Create a Memorable Customer Experience With Social Media Dave Toliver is the Director of Corporate Marketing at Angel, a leading provider of cloud based customer experience solutions. By developing innovative IVR, call center and voice applications that put the customer first, Angel is changing the way enterprises serve their customers. There's bad news and good news about the way consumers interact with brands on social media. The bad news? The good news? If you think you’re not “on” or “doing” social media, you’re wrong. To help your brand do this, here are seven ways to create a memorable customer experience on social media. 1. Some companies are afraid to set up Facebook pages because they allow customers to comment, which means someone might write something negative. When customers complain on your brand's Facebook page, you can respond and resolve issues. 2. Neglecting your social media properties when they're full of customer complaints is suicide for your brand. Don't open up the floor for complaints without a plan to handle them. 3.

Facebook to Include Sponsored Stories in News Feeds Bodymetrics Uses AR to Solve the Online Shopping Dilemma, Virtually Try on Clothing Online shoppers may be able to buy clothes in their pajamas, but they never know just how well those purchases will actually fit. That problem may soon be history — thanks to a breakthrough piece of augmented reality technology from Bodymetrics. The company has partnered with PrimeSense on a 3D body-mapping product to be revealed this week at CES 2012. The product uses PrimeSense 3D sensors, much like those used for Microsoft Kinect, to scan a user's height and waist size, as well as the other shapes and curves that make a body unique. After creating an account, users will be able to virtually try on clothes from partner retailers to get a true sense of how potential purchases fit. The 3D body-mapping will be available for preview at CES, but Bodymetrics is still fine-tuning its business model — including its final price, which the company said will be approximately $150. However, Bodymetrics believes its 3D figure-reader built on PrimeSense technology is the game-changer.

Facebook's Open Graph expands to new businesses Facebook has just made its Open Graph platform more open for business. Facebook launched the platform and its Timeline feature in September, and by now its 800 million members are familiar with how they can instantly share songs from Spotify or news stories they're reading through the Washington Post. But Facebook is expanding the universe of available Timeline apps beyond music, news and video to include apps for sharing favorite restaurants, travel spots, movies, online deals and more. At a press conference Wednesday in San Francisco, Facebook announced it had opened up the next stage of the Open Graph system to include 60 new third-party companies that have developed apps for Timeline, including eBay, Foodspotting, Rotten Tomatoes, StubHub, Airbnb, Gogobot and Pinterest. If a Facebook member chooses, each app shows up as a module on their Timeline that gives a summary of recent shared activities. "This is going to be the biggest catalyst for pushing social commerce," said Payvment Inc.
