More Economies of Scale: Efficiency, Head Count and TCO | Clouds James Hamilton’s presentation at Mix 10 illuminated cloud computing economics that few others have direct experience with, but I also believe that this presentation raises interesting questions that didn’t get addressed. (If you haven’t seen James Hamilton’s Mix10 presentation, go watch it now. You should probably also go through Randy’s follow up, and then watch James talk again… I’ve watched it 3 times now.) This is the first post that will refer to aspects of James’ talk (and I plan at least one more about business models) and in case I haven’t stressed this enough, if you have any interest in understanding the economics of cloud computing, take the time to watch one of the best in this business. The industrial strength infrastructure includes four fiber vaults and three electric power feeds, which provide the building with more than 100 megawatts of power. 350 East Cermak is currently the second-largest power customer for Commonwealth Edison, trailing only Chicago’s O’Hare Airport. One of the most distinctive features of the facility is its cooling system, which is supported by an 8.5 million gallon tank of a refrigerated brine-like liquid (seen at left in the top photo).
