Renewal2 Announces its First Exit from Portfolio Company Horizon Distributors BURNABY, B.C., Dec. 06 /CSRwire/ - Renewal2 Investment Fund is pleased to announce the fund’s first exit with the sale of its stake in portfolio company, Horizon Distributors. Horizon Distributors is one of Canada's leading organic, natural and gourmet foods distributors, serving retailers and providing the best natural, organic, gourmet and eco-products. Renewal2’s shares in Horizon were successfully sold to the company’s majority owner, Ron Francisco and a gain was realized on the disposition of the investment. Horizon was one of two portfolio companies that Renewal Partners contributed as part of their investment into Renewal2. The company was chosen as a portfolio contribution given its relative strength, size and long history of value creation for their shareholders. In 1995, Renewal Partners provided a loan to Horizon’s predecessor and in 1998 became an equity investor when Horizon restructured from a co-op.

Patrick FitzGerald: The Social Entrepreneur's Dilemma So you have an idea that's going to save the world or at the very least alter a small portion of it in a positive way. Congratulations, the trends seem to be in your favor. Be it environmental, educational, or philanthropic, the rise in "social" entrepreneurship in the past decade has been astounding. In addition, most large-scale corporations have embedded the notion of doing good into their bottom line and most MBA programs now have core classes dedicated to the topic. Yet, in order to make a potentially game-changing idea a long-standing reality, it is highly recommended that social entrepreneurs look at their business model and ask a very simple question: Could my company be a profitable one? Bizarrely enough, the notion of creating a for-profit social enterprise is still considered unwise, unlikely and for some, just unethical. I first encountered this dilemma while founding my first company, Recyclebank, in 2003. Looking at the car-sharing world further proves the point.

Journey into Brazil’s Social Sector The founder of the first social fund in Brazil tells his story. (Illustration by Shannon May) Over the past decade, the social sector in Brazil has undergone a growth spurt. In 2002, the Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatistica, the government-led national statistics bureau, counted 276,000 NGOs. By 2005, there were 338,000, a quarter of which were religious organizations. According to the same census, however, 74 percent of nonprofits, including hospitals and universities, have no paid employees and only 6 percent have more than 10 staff. So there is good news about civil society activity in my country, but there is also concern about how sustainable and effective the social sector really is. I have always been interested in the public good. If you ask Brazilian executives what they want to do when they retire, many will say “Open an inn at the beach.” Before I took the plunge I asked myself: What is the worst that can happen? The development process took about one year.
