Constructivism as a Paradigm for Teaching and Learning What is constructivism? How does this theory differ from traditional ideas about teaching and learning? What does constructivism have to do with my classroom? Expert interview What is the history of constructivism, and how has it changed over time? What are some critical perspectives? What are the benefits of constructivism? What is constructivism? Constructivism is basically a theory -- based on observation and scientific study -- about how people learn. In the classroom, the constructivist view of learning can point towards a number of different teaching practices. Constructivist teachers encourage students to constantly assess how the activity is helping them gain understanding. You might look at it as a spiral. For example: Groups of students in a science class are discussing a problem in physics. Contrary to criticisms by some (conservative/traditional) educators, constructivism does not dismiss the active role of the teacher or the value of expert knowledge.

The People Vs. Coloring Books: The Verdict Is In : NPR Ed So what's up with the crayons? Everywhere you go lately — the bookstore, Starbucks — even here at NPR — I see grown men and women sitting around coloring. Every time, this takes me back to rainy childhood days on the living room floor: A robot. A mosaic of geometric houses. Clearly, I've stumbled upon the national craze for adult coloring books. My first question was: Really? Yup. Why do people like coloring so much? I've seen my daughter bring home worksheets from elementary school, asking her to color in this or that picture after answering a math or word problem. I've always thought coloring books are, educationally speaking, bad news. So, as part of our Tools of the Trade series, here's a a look at kids and coloring books and whether they have any place in the classroom. Opening arguments Let's start in 1947 with a guy named Viktor Lowenfeld, and some fascinating thinking about what arts education is about and what it's trying to accomplish. I eventually tracked down a copy of the book.
