sans titre Long, hard look: Would-be scientists should consider the likely rewards of their chosen career. Would you want your child to be a scientist? My 15-year-old son asked me the other day what he should do after school. My instant response was "don't be a scientist". Given that I work with more than 200 research scientists, I realised this was a very sad reflection on the state of the industry. For most Australian research scientists this is the official "grant-writing season", the time of year when weeks, if not months, are spent writing, reviewing and amending grant applications – instead of conducting meaningful research. eventbrite.co This course is designed by public speakers with multidisciplinary training, including Advocacy at the English Bar (Barrister training) and Psychology; and with extensive experience in teaching and delivering public speaking to diverse audiences internationally. Medical PhDs need to look beyond research careers Professor Warwick Anderson, CEO of the National Health and Medical Research Council, at his office in Canberra. Picture: Gary Ramage Source: The Australian ANAEMIC success rates for medical research grants has highlighted the need for medical PhD students to have broader training for alternative careers, the National Health and Medical Research Council has warned. And students need to be able to make career decisions early rather than perhaps end up frustrated well into a research career, NHMRC chief Warwick Anderson said. How to Talk in Meetings When You Hate Talking in Meetings Nobody loves meetings. But they can be especially taxing for people who crave a quieter setting for brainstorming or thinking through issues, or who struggle to have their voices heard in a room full of loud-talkers. How can these folks make sure their ideas are well-represented in team meetings? For some practical advice, we turned to Susan Cain, author of Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking and co-founder of The Quiet Leadership Institute, which helps companies unlock the power of the introverted half of the workforce. An edited version of our conversation follows:

How to Design an Innovative Course Last week I stumbled upon an interesting article, on Contact North’s website, titled How to Design an Innovative Course. I have to admit that initially my interest was piqued because the term “innovative” has been a buzz word in the e-learning industry for many moons, so I wasn’t sure if I would buy into the “innovation” the article was proposing or whether it would be just another article peddling non-innovative innovation. However, the article was posted by Contact North, and I respect Contact North, so I gave it a read, applying it to online courses in particular. I quickly found myself nodding at my computer monitor – doing something differently ISN’T innovative (most times). Reading further, I continued nodding. “In particular innovative teaching should result in solving some challenge or problem you are facing.” (2014) – YES!

Evaluating retrieval practice in a MOOC Videos are often the core content in open online education, such as in Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). Students spend most of their time in a MOOC on watching educational videos. However, merely watching a video is a relatively passive learning activity. To increase the educational benefits of online videos, students could benefit from more actively interacting with the to-be-learned material. In this paper two studies (n = 13k) are presented which examined the educational benefits of two more active learning strategies: 1) Retrieval Practice tasks which asked students to shortly summarize the content of videos, and 2) Given Summary tasks in which the students were asked to read pre-written summaries of videos.
