Can I Get Some Sustainability With That Shake? This week, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency issued Energy Star ratings for large vat commercial fryers. These appliances are used by high-volume dining establishments — like fast food chains, institutional cafeterias and full-service restaurants— to make french fries, hush puppies and anything else Paula Deen would promote, in bulk. Encouraging the industry to upgrade to more energy-efficient fryers could help reduce the overall environmental (if not health) impact of kitchens in the U.S. catering to the collective appetite for fried foods, an appetite that seems pervasive, and permanent here. One Texan cook, Mark Zable, has even invented a method to make deep-fried beer. According to a press statement and calculations by the EPA: ” If every large vat fryer in the [country] met the new Energy Star requirements, energy cost savings would increase approximately $81 million per year and reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to the emissions from nearly 95,000 cars.”

GPS bracelet uses social media to protect Civil Rights Activists The Civil Rights Defenders have issued their first batch of GPS bracelets that will alert the CRDs' headquarters, other nearby activists, and the entirety of the CRDs' social media following if the bracelet's owner is ever kidnapped. The first 5 bracelets were issued from April 2nd through April 5th during the Civil Rights Defenders' conference, Defenders' Days. The CRD plans on issuing 55 of these bracelets over the next year and a half. The bracelets are described as a personal alarm, and the product is called the "Natalia Project". It was named after Natalia Estemirova, a human rights defender who, in 2009, was murdered within 24 hours of being kidnapped. The GPS bracelet can be activated manually, or if an attacker forcefully removes it from the activist's wrist. The Civil Rights Defenders state that these bracelets could potentially alert hundreds of thousands of people instantly.

SocialButterfly optimus L’Association Valentin Haüy ( œuvre depuis sa création en 1889, pour que les aveugles et les malvoyants puissent « vivre tout simplement ». L’association souffre d’un déficit de notoriété grand public et d’implication à la cause défendue. En effet, le grand public (voyant) n’a pas forcément conscience des difficultés rencontrées par les aveugles et malvoyants, et surtout des solutions que peut apporter une structure comme l’Association Valentin Haüy. A travers le film « Les Victoires », l’Association Valentin Haüy et Optimus évoquent avec simplicité des gestes banals, ordinaires pour des voyants, qui représentent de véritables victoires pour les aveugles et les malvoyants. Réalisé à partir d’un casting de volontaires, le film met en scène des femmes et des hommes réellement aveugles ou très malvoyants sous forme de témoignages des gestes du quotidien.

Never Be Left Out Inclusion is the secret sauce of social media. It’s one of the biggest opportunities. We can fill that sense of a need to belong. Social media allows for this. Before you get all “gee whiz” about that, or think that it’s something too touchy-feely, realize that what humans want more than most things is validation. Think about it: would you rather 10,000 dispassionate people swing by, and maybe 50 make a purchase, or would you rather 300 really loyal people stick around, buy from you when the products make sense, and tell their friends how they’re part of something?
