It all starts with the original 1958 edition, which was the most vanilla cover imaginable. Lolita and Humbert Humbert — they’re nowhere to be seen. By the 1960s, publishers got a little less gun shy, and the covers, more risqué. The Covering Lolita Archive contains 185 book and media covers from 37 countries, spanning 56 years.

Buster Keaton was the best stunt man ever. Let's do some physics on his vintage feats I’m beginning to think that Buster Keaton was the greatest all time stunt-person. Just look at this reel of some of his greatest stunts—most performed during his peak artistic period between 1920 and 1929—and realize that for many of these scenes, this stuff had never been accomplished before. There was no Stunt Person’s Handbook to go by, just his own wit and courage. Somebody could probably write a whole book on the physics of Buster Keaton, but I am just going to look at one stunt today. In this scene, starting at 00:42 seconds, Buster grabs onto the back of a moving vehicle to make a quick escape. Of course I would like to get position-time data from this video using Video Analysis, but as usual there could be a small problem. The scale—in particular, how many pixels on the video are equal to one meter (or whatever your preferred units for distance). The frame rate—the time interval from one frame to the next. The acceleration of some object (or the speed). GIF of the Day: RIP Carrie Fisher The above GIF is drawn from what may be the most famous broken video clip in pop culture. It’s an image of Princess Leia, (played by Carrie Fisher), sending a distress message in the movie Star Wars. “Help me Obi Wan Kenobi. You are my only hope,” she says. The message repeats. It’s probably not accurate to think of this broken clip as a proto-GIF—the earliest GIFs were much more simple, looping animations—but its appeal and long standing presence in the cultural consciousness exists for many of the same formal reasons GIFs are so popular today. As many readers will have already read, Carrie Fisher died today at the age of 60.The cause was heart failure. Tagged as: Carrie Fisher, gif of the day, Princess Leia, star wars
