The web was still in its infancy and the gopher was the state of the art in technology. The first version of this survey was published in the February 1994 issue of the New England Classical Journal. [NECJ XXI.3 (1993-94) 117-21]. Concise Encyclopedia of Economics Harry Johnson, a Canadian, was one of the most active and prolific economists of all time. His main research was in the area of international trade, international finance, and monetary policy. One of Johnson's early articles on international trade showed that a country with monopoly power in some good could impose a tariff and be better off, even if other countries retaliated against the tariff. His proof was what is sometimes called a "possibility theorem"; it showed that such a tariff could improve the country's well-being, not that it was likely to. Johnson, realizing the difference between what could be and what is likely to be, was a strong believer in free trade.
Once upon a time many companies were able to manage their whole infrastructure and implement all services alone for their customers. Telecom operators offered the telephone services – including value added services – and tried to make the ecosystem more dynamic with their own intelligent networks. And they wanted to manage applications in mobile phones too. Banks were able to manage the finance needs of ordinary people, like lend money, pay interests to savings, help with wealth management and handle money transfers. Manufacturing companies had their own machines and IT that was their own proprietary territory. But this time is over, and now companies must survive in the API (application programming interface) economy. The Encyclopedia Americana presents The Encyclopedia Americana is a US-based encyclopedia published in the 20th and 21st century.
