Barcelona Barcelona[nota 1] es una ciudad española, capital de la provincia homónima y de la comunidad autónoma de Cataluña. Con una población de 1 620 943 habitantes en 2012[4] es la segunda ciudad más poblada de España después de Madrid, y la undécima de la Unión Europea. El área metropolitana de Barcelona, incluida en la Región urbana de Barcelona, cuenta con 5 029 181 habitantes (2011), siendo así la sexta ciudad de mayor población de la Unión Europea.[5] Se ubica a orillas del mar Mediterráneo, apenas 120 km al sur de la cadena montañosa de los Pirineos y de la frontera con Francia, en un pequeño llano litoral limitado por el mar al este, la sierra de Collserola al oeste, el río Llobregat al sur y el río Besós al norte. Barcelona ha sido escenario de diversos eventos mundiales, que han contribuido a configurar la ciudad y darle proyección internacional. Photo Friday: Gaudi’s fruity cathedral Barcelona, Spain; October 2008 We spent five days in Barcelona, staying in an apartment about two blocks from La Sagrada Familia (The Sacred Family), the famous cathedral designed by Antoni Gaudi. It’s worth seeing for two reasons. Firstly, the architecture is startlingly original – it really is like nothing I’ve ever seen before. The building reminded me of a giant wax sculpture – all melted curves and tapering spires. Secondly, the cathedral is not yet finished. It’s not often you get to see a cathedral under construction and I found it really interesting to go in the lift to the roof and look down upon all the cranes, and then descend via a stone spiral staircase.. The cathedral opens at 9am and if you can get there at opening time, you’ll be pleased you did. Antoni Gaudi Antoni Gaudi (b. Reus, Spain 1852; d. Barcelona, Spain 1926) The son of a coppersmith, Antoni Gaudi was born in Reus, Spain in 1852. Over the course of his career, Gaudi developed a sensuous, curving, almost surreal design style which established him as the innovative leader of the Spanish Art Nouveau movement. Gaudí-museum Casa Museu Gaudí, gelegen binnen de omheining van het Park Güell, was gedurende twintig jaar – vanaf 1906 tot einde 1925 – het woonhuis van Antoni Gaudí. Op 23 september 1963 werd het ingehuldigd als museum en het bewaart vandaag de dag een verzameling van meubels en voorwerpen die door de architect werden ontworpen. Ruta del Modernisme La Barcelona de finales del siglo XIX, la de la Exposición Universal de 1888, era una ciudad en efervescencia en la que la arquitectura vivía un momento notable. La arquitectura se convirtió en aquellos años en un signo de estatus social de la próspera burguesía de la época. Tener una casa modernista significaba figurar, estar al día en los círculos sociales. Para colmar las expectativas y vanidades de sus clientes, los arquitectos utilizaron en su obra todo su repertorio de recursos: ornamentos florales, riqueza escultórica y trabajo del hierro forjado, formas onduladas, vidrieras policromas, esgrafiados, detalles cerámicos, etc. A menudo las grandes ciudades pueden asociarse con edificios y monumentos que se convierten en sus emblemas universales. Éste, sin embargo, no es el caso de Barcelona. En este punto comienza la Ruta de un día, concebida para el caso en que sólo se disponga de un día para visitar el Modernismo de la ciudad.
