I asked her about the art of trend forecasting, and what's next for 2013/14. Tell us a little bit about yourself…I've been a fashion designer for 13 years and have always had a strong eye for trends so I naturally evolved into trend forecasting when I moved to London after living in Los Angeles and New York. I was born, raised and studied fashion in Paris but my mother's a New Yorker and my father is British. Can you give us a summary of how trend forecasting works? Whilst gathering facts, at the root of it is also a personal intuition and an eye for what's next, that can't be taught or necessarily explained. That's also what defines the difference between short-term forecasting and long-term forecasting which are key in the business. What are the big trends for autumn winter 2013/14? Welcome to The Computer Graphics Society AM on The Present Tense The Style Economist: The Circular Flow Model and Fashion Trend Forecasting It’s fascinating how the fashion industry works. For one, it’s actually more complex than how the economy works as in the Circular Flow Model: Goods and services flow in one direction, while money flows around the economy in the opposite direction. Households spend money to buy goods and services in product markets, and this money is received by the firms as revenue. These firms then pay money for the factors of production they utilize, in wages, rent and interest. Thus the households receive their income, to be used in purchasing goods and services. On the other hand, households provide factor markets with labor, land, capital and entrepreneurship, as well as inputs for production so that firms may produce goods and services. It’s an extremely simplified model, so uncomplicated you might think I just really wanted to get it over with. It's something we've wondered about for years: How do fashion trends come about? And then, we see it on the runways of Fashion Week. Jill
