Republicans Answer A Liberal's 28 Questions, And They Still Make No Damned Sense To Her Republicans answer my 28 questions, but still leave me baffled. At least they tried. Last week I asked “28 questions for Republicans” because I’m utterly flabbergasted by how anyone can support a president like Donald Trump or the cruel and reckless agenda laid out in the GOP’s 2016 platform. The response was amazing. Then Bill Yarborough and Jay Kruger (who took care to mention he’s actually a Libertarian, not a Republican) took time to answer all of my questions. Many of my fellow liberals may want to call Bill Yarborough and Jay Kruger “stupid” or “callous” or “brainwashed.” When Republicans answer my questions, I’m not going to look a gift horse in the mouth no matter how much I disagree with them. But what I find odd is that — despite often being nice people — conservatives seem to have a distinct lack of empathy and ability to relate to anyone’s experience other than their own. But what strikes me the most is how conservative policies are so often all stick and no carrot. Yup. 1.

How to set up a password manager. iStock You use the same password for lots of different websites. It’s OK. Everyone does it. No matter how many times your IT guy, nerdy friend, or even Slate tells you to use a different password on every site, no one does it because it would be too hard to keep track of all of them. Of course, as numerous hacks of large companies over the years remind you, if you use the same password on your bank account that you use for buying a framed picture of your dog, then someone who hacks the framing site will also have the credentials to get into your bank account. That’s where a password manager comes in handy. Step 1: Choose a password manager. Step 2: Download and install the app and its various other accessory apps. As part of the installation, you’ll be asked to come up with a master password. Step 3: I recommend that you write that one important password down on a piece of paper, put it in a locked box, and reveal its location to one person you would trust with all your money. 1Password

The Peculiar Math That Could Underlie the Laws of Nature After breaks from school spent ski-bumming, bartending abroad and intensely training as a mixed martial artist, Furey later met the division algebras again in an advanced geometry course and learned just how peculiar they become in four strokes. When you double the dimensions with each step as you go from real numbers to complex numbers to quaternions to octonions, she explained, “in every step you lose a property.” Real numbers can be ordered from smallest to largest, for instance, “whereas in the complex plane there’s no such concept.” Next, quaternions lose commutativity; for them, a × b doesn’t equal b × a. This makes sense, since multiplying higher-dimensional numbers involves rotation, and when you switch the order of rotations in more than two dimensions you end up in a different place. Much more bizarrely, the octonions are nonassociative, meaning (a × b) × c doesn’t equal a × (b × c). The Dixon Algebra The Dixon Algebra

Pretty Damned Fast Georges Thenault The 50 best nonfiction books of past 25 years. “As a writer, I prefer to get bossed around by my notebook and the facts therein,” David Carr wrote in his reported memoir The Night of the Gun, one of Slate’s 50 best nonfiction books of the past 25 years. Carr was mulling over the difference between fiction and nonfiction, the novelist’s art and the reporter’s craft. “They may not lead to a perfect, seamless arc, but they lead to a story that coheres in another way, because it is mostly true.” In the work of canon-building, nonfiction tends to get short shrift. Slate’s list of the definitive nonfiction books written in English in the past quarter-century includes beautifully written memoirs but also books of reportage, collections of essays, travelogues, works of cultural criticism, passionate arguments, even a compendium of household tips.
