Adam Westbrook // Journal In search of serendipity A year ago, out of necessity more than anything else, I started going to the library again. I've spent most of my time at the American Library in Paris, nestled on a quiet street in the shadow of the The Eiffel Tower. Whole Food’s Dark Rye profiles MAKE editor-in-chief Mark Frauenfelder This summer the folks who produce Dark Rye, the online magazine for Whole Foods Markets, came to my house in Los Angeles, and shot a video profile of my daughters and me working on different projects. We made a guitar out of a metal lunchbox, a skateboard, and soap molded from our toes and fingers. The video shoot took place over two days, and we spent about 10 hours per day following the director’s orders. My daughters were real troopers — each scene required about five takes, and we traveled all over Los Angeles to produce the video. The Dark Rye production team was extremely friendly and courteous, and we had a terrific time together. If you haven’t checked out the Dark Rye website, I suggest you visit it.

99 Problems Pick up a SIGNED copy of 99 PROBLEMS($5.99 for a limited time) lil-ye: “Who Gon Stop Me?” Oil Boom: See A Modern-Day Gold Rush In Motion If you've seen any coverage of North Dakota's oil boom, you've seen the images — oil rigs, truck traffic, "man camps," miles of temporary housing. But there is something about this place that just can't be captured by a still photograph. It's a feeling you get when you cruise down an endless highway under a vast, big sky — until suddenly: BOOM. You're wedged between semitrucks dwarfing what was once a quiet farm town.

Cupful of QR Genius From Guinness Some years ago, I enthusiastically reported on the optical illusion coasters created by BBDO New York for Guinness brand beer. They were a low-tech way to create conversation and engagement with the product. Here we are again with a product-activated higher-tech idea. When Guinness is poured into a specially marked glass a QR (Quick Response) code is revealed. AdWeek reports, when you scan the code with a smartphone it “tweets about your pint, updates your Facebook status, checks you in via Foursquare, downloads coupons and promotions, invites your friends to join you, and even launches exclusive Guinness content.” What’s sneaky is that a golden colored beer won’t work, it’s gotta be a dark beer like a Guinness.

Writing Questions Answered Anonymous asked: My mc has a crush on a guy who’s an adult film actor. I’ve written the first chapter but it seems like he’s just lusting after him. How can I make it so it seems like he’s genuinely in love? I think there’s a really fine line between unrequited love, a one-way crush, and simply lusting after someone. First, the two clear things that make unrequited love different: Documenting Mythologies - Documentary Film, Radio, Photography A simple escape from the city becomes the frame for a series of collaborative video essays. Documenting Mythologies follows a group of media-makers on a road trip from Brooklyn to rural Maine. Diverse aesthetic approaches to documentary are used to explore a theme inspired by the 1957 collection of texts by Roland Barthes titled Mythologies.

Explorations IE Award: Evaluation In this project, my aim was to make a documentary with good quality and good story-line with the group. I wanted to be able to work together with my team and work efficiently. Our objective was to be able to make many different perspectives on the problem through interviews. This will result to a well made documentary. The strengths to our documentary was that we had some pretty good interviews. Also our graphics at the very start of the documentary were pretty good.

I watch therefore I am: seven movies that teach us key philosophy lessons How can we do the right thing?Force Majeure If you had lived in Germany in 1939, would you have helped protect Jews or gone along with their systematic extermination? If you had been an MP 10 years ago, would you have milked your expenses for what they were worth? And if you and your family faced a threat, would you protect them or save yourself? We all like to think that in such situations our basic decency would shine through, but we can never know.
