Tracing Knowledge ... Στα ίχνη της Γνώσης New evidence from the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider reveals different kinds of phase changes at different collision energies News Release By Karen McNulty Walsh April 4, 2014 Brookhaven National Laboratory Απο την κοσμική σούπα του πρώιμου σύμπαντος στην ύλη του σήμερα Στα ίχνη που άφησε η ύλη καθώς μεταμορφωνόταν απο την κατάσταση της κοσμικής σούπας που βρισκόταν την εποχή του πρώιμου σύμπαντος, στην σημερινή της μορφή, με νέα δεδομένα απο τον Σχετικιστικό Επιταχυντή Βαρέων Ιόντων (RHIC) του εργαστηρίου Brookhaven.

Color Vision, Cones, and Color-Coding in the Cortex Color processing begins with the absorption of light by cone photoreceptors, and progresses through a series of hierarchical stages: Retinal signals carrying color information are transmitted through the lateral geniculate nucleus of the thalamus (LGN) up to the primary visual cortex (V1). From V1, the signals are processed by the second visual area (V2); then by cells located in subcompartments (“globs”) within the posterior inferior temporal (PIT) cortex, a brain region that encompasses area V4 and brain regions immediately anterior to V4. Color signals are then processed by regions deep within the inferior temporal (IT) cortex including area TE. As a heuristic, one can consider each of these stages to be involved in constructing a distinct aspect of the color percept.

Scientific Integrity: Let Science Do Its Job Our civilization is built on a foundation of science. Life as we know it is the result of a remarkable series of technological advances over the past few centuries—advances largely driven by partnerships between science and government. But science can only thrive when it’s independent. When commercial or ideological interests pressure scientists to distort or suppress their findings, science is weakened, and we all lose. Our scientific integrity work began in 2004 in response to a growing problem of political interference in government science.

JabRef Food, Health and Agriculture Bioscience News By Thomas Bøhn and Marek Cuhra Food and feed quality are crucial to human and animal health. Quality can be defined as sufficiency of appropriate minerals, vitamins and fats, etc. but it also includes the absence of toxins, whether man-made or from other sources. Surprisingly, almost no data exist in the scientific literature on herbicide residues in herbicide tolerant genetically modified (GM) plants, even after nearly 20 years on the market. In research recently published by our laboratory (Bøhn et al. 2014) we collected soybean samples grown under three typical agricultural conditions: organic, GM, and conventional (but non-GM).
