We've all gathered quite a few simple and creative ideas for you! Let's get started with the items that I find most helpful in my own home. They come in all shapes, sizes, and colors and make the top of my list for their versatility and penchant for containing and hiding ANYTHING. We keep our reading material contained in the living room in large wire mesh baskets under our coffee table. This is in our All-in-One office/theater/library/guest room. Inside the baskets are all manner of electronics and their cords, extra CD cases, and DVDs. In my pantry, the large baskets up top hold extra Kleenex, to-go food storage containers, and paper towels. This is a medium magazine basket that I got from Thirty One HERE. It's handy most anywhere, it holds rolls of ribbon on its bar and gift wrapping supplies, or toilet paper on the bar and magazines below,
Vintage Suitcase Storage Every time I visit a flea market or antique mall, I'm always drawn to the vintage suitcases. They're not exactly practical for travel these days, but they are perfect for decor and storage. Don't you love how this one is being used? I’m done with the stinky stench of microwave popcorn. Actually, I haven’t popped a single bag of that toxic smelling stuff in years since I hate the thought of being swindled by a stank bag of greasy kernels. Doing the mathy math, microwave popcorn costs around $22.65 for 12 boxes with 3 packets per box (source Amazon) — that’s an eye-popping $3.53 per pound! Sure, you may think you’re paying all that delicious cash for a magic metal-lined bag that pops better kernels and cooks your corn more evenly. Now let me pop the big question: have you ever recycled your leftover microwave popcorn bags? Speaking of waist, do you know how many calories are contained in those popcorn flavor packets? vintage suitcase chair My latest sytyc project for ‘upcycle’ week. A little less sewing than usual and a little more decor-y. I love vintage luggage! It’s so nostalgic to me, I always am reminded of my grandfather’s travel journal that he wrote in the 40s. As a bonus, this suitcase smelled like my grandpa’s house when I bought it! When I think of upcycling, I think of turning something into something completely different. I love that it still looks like a suitcase, it has an old world appeal. tutorial: You need: vintage suitcase 4 legs 4 screw on leg attachments 1 piece of thin plywood cut to fit inside your suitcase foam or pillows to fit in your suitcase fabric Suitcase sizes vary so you’ll have to figure out how much pillow or foam you want to make your cushions how you want them. step 1: spray paint legs step 2: cover the pillows/foam with your fabric and tuft them. I used a pattern of 3 tufts, 2 tufts, 3 tufts, in a brick pattern. Once your holders are all set, screw in your (dried) legs. We love it.

Credenza: Practical meets Pretty Last year I remodeled my home office, and it’s been a genuine pleasure working in this pretty and personalized space. For the longest time, I was loving the sofa that sat on one wall, but over time, paperwork started piling up, and I reasoned I needed a more practical solution if I really was going to run a business from home. So I made some changes! I started with a credenza I found at (where else?) a thrift store. Before: After: Slate blue/gray paint + sleek contemporary pulls + geometric pattern on top = perfect! Some of you are probably wondering how the heck did I get such straight painted lines on this piece? First, let’s start at the beginning. Here you can see I’m painting the laminate shelf on the inside. Note the can says "No sanding" but people ask me all the time if that is for real. Moving on. Next, I thought I was sooooo smart to paint the rough pattern in white, lay painter’s tape on top, then add the gray paint over the top of that. First attempt: This I have learned.

One Lucky Day: Inspired at Costco, who knew? Have you seen the latest issue of Where Women Create? I picked it up Monday night at Costco of all places (love that it's 30% off the cover price there). I knew I couldn't pass it up when I saw the FABULOUS studio of mixed media artist Gail Rieke. But it was when I opened the magazine and saw the entire wall that I was truly amazed and inspired. My first thought, "I want that". So, I emailed Deb and said, "have I got an idea for Wednesday's blog post...suitcases!" After that conversation, Deb went on a hunt to find ideas using suitcases in decor (this is really only half of what she found) to share with you today. Between Paula and I we have probably close to 45 vintage suitcases, so apparently we like the way they look and all the fun things we can do with them.
