geopolitics | political science Geopolitics, analysis of the geographic influences on power relationships in international relations. The word geopolitics was originally coined by the Swedish political scientist Rudolf Kjellén about the turn of the 20th century, and its use spread throughout Europe in the period between World Wars I and II (1918–39) and came into worldwide use during the latter. In contemporary discourse, geopolitics has been widely employed as a loose synonym for international politics. Arguments about the political effects of geography—particularly climate, topography, arable land, and access to the sea—have appeared in Western political thought since at least the ancient Greek era and were prominent in the writings of philosophers as diverse as Aristotle (384–322 bc) and Montesquieu (1689–1745). Mahan’s historical analysis of the rise of the British Empire was the starting point for the geopolitical debate. Daniel H.

Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust - About Us The Northland-based Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust (CC23406) was established in 2002, as a charitable umbrella and support organisation for the Experiencing Marine Reserves (EMR) marine education and Whitebait Connection (WBC) freshwater education programmes. These are both leading models in education for sustainability in Aotearoa/New Zealand. The Trust sees education as a vital part of society and central to all environmental restoration. Both programmes involve young people, their parents and the wider community. Our programmes reinforce simple concepts such as the uniqueness of our freshwater and marine biodiversity and provide an active focus on conservation of these environments through education and action. Our goal is to empower and support communities to achieve marine and freshwater conservation through science based experiential programmes, resources, projects and community engagement. {easyfolderlistingpro profile="1" folder="images/msct/docs" }

Mushrooms Can Eat Plastic, Petroleum and CO2 Mushrooms have a solution for just about every man-made problem In the midst of global warming, global desertification, deoxygenating oceans and Earth’s sixth mass extinction crisis, mycologist and author Paul Stamets gives us seven reasons to hold out hope, and they all involve mushrooms. In a still-relevant 2008 Ted Talk, he says mushrooms contain the solution to just about every major problem humans have created, from global warming, to oil spills, to plastic pollution. The story of mushrooms Fungi were the first organisms to come to land 1.3 billion years ago, clearing the way for plants to grow, by breaking rocks down into soil. Stamets, author of Mycelium Running: How Mushrooms Can Help Save the World , believes the planet was covered in giant mushrooms about half a billion years ago, and have survived all of Earth’s mass extinction events including the fifth, when an asteroid wiped out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. Mycelium is Earth’s natural internet, Stamet says. 1. 2. 3. 4.

Local Focus: Plastic stockpiles growing after China shuts out our rubbish Squashed and stacked more than 2m high, hundreds of thousands of plastic bottles from Huntly's Metro Waste recycling station are at last on the move to Malaysia. But in other parts of the country, stockpiled recyclables are causing a problem. Ever since China stopped accepting recyclables from countries such as New Zealand, waste stations have had to hold on to their rubbish until an alternative market is found. At its peak, there were 400 tonnes of plastic stored here, Waikato District Council Acting Waters Manager, Karl Pavlovich said. "Changes in the recycling market resulted in us stockpiling some plastics, but a lot of that is over now," Pavlovich said. "We now have found new markets to move a lot of that waste and recycling." Meanwhile at Smart Enviro's facility near Thames the stockpile is five times - 2000 tonnes of plastic and 1000 tonnes of paper and cardboard stacked in bales indoors and outdoors, waiting to be sent offshore. "We need to think nationally. Made with funding from

8 steps to solve the ocean's plastic problem The ocean provides us with everything we need: food, oxygen, inspiration and jobs. It also regulates the climate. Despite its vital importance, we are currently treating our ocean like an enormous dump. A whole garbage truck’s worth of plastic ends up in the ocean every minute, and we are way overdue in doing something about the problem. It was a sad but important day when a Cuvier's beaked whale was beached on Sotra in Norway with 30 plastic bags in its stomach. Image: Ellen MacArthur Foundation Every year, an estimated 8 million tons of plastic end up in the ocean. The plastic creates big problems for wildlife and for humans. 1. We use an incredible quantity of single-use plastic items, such as straws, plastic bags, packaging, plastic cups, plates and cutlery. 2. Over the past 50 years, world plastic production has doubled, and leading plastic manufacturers are planning to increase production by almost a third over the next five years.
