The Age of Coworking: Collaborative Consumption for the Creative Community
Report Maria Popova Many coworking spaces are housed in meticulously designed lofts. Photo from Green Spaces, NYC. The shift from an ownership economy to an economy of sharing has been one of the most important movements of the past few years – a concept most eloquently captured in Rachel Botsman's notion of collaborative consumption. From car- and bike-sharing to bookcycling reading clubs, the decentralization of resources is enabling us to have more by owning less — because, as Kevin Kelly puts it, "access trumps possession." A rapidly proliferating number of coworking spaces worldwide is attracting creative entrepreneurs and freelancers across the entire spectrum of vocations, from startup founders to professional proofreaders. In New York City alone, dozens such coworking spaces exist. Coworking spaces fused with incubators are even popping up under the wings of existing funds. Mine, too. Not sure how to find one?

Coworking global survey: 42% of all coworkers report earning a higher income since joining a coworking space | Coworking Europe 2010 A few days ago, Deskmag, the coworking magazine, launched a worldwide survey, in order to investigate the motivations of the users of coworking spaces. Coworking Europe 2010 is proud to be a partner of this great initiative. The survey collected answers from 661 coworking space users around the world, originating from 24 different countries. Here they are : Firstly, it seems a large majority of coworkers are very satisfied with their coworking space. You may find more results of the survey here One month ago, Entreprise Globale and Tech4i2, released the results coming from a survey on Coworking spaces in Europe. Then, 87% of the surveyed European coworking space answered that new projects were born from a collaboration between people who first met in the coworking space. All those datas are building the case to sustain the creation for more coworking spaces in Europe and elsewhere. We think it’s a fantastic news. Like this: Like Loading...

Do Good Investment Managers Give Away Great Ideas? It’s Entirely Rational According to New Study In the competitive, performance-driven world of professional investment management, why would any rational manager share a potentially market-beating investment idea with rival fund managers? And are the ideas they do share any good? Several months ago, I wrote about SumZero, a relatively new private online community where buy-side managers “share actionable ideas with one another and grow their professional networks.” Cross-sectional data on buy-side stock recommendations is relatively difficult to come by, but a trio of researchers was granted access to SumZero‘s data goldmine: a representative sample of the roughly 4,000 peer-rated investment ideas shared on the site, which they found had earned an average market-adjusted cumulative abnormal return of 4.03% in the 45 days after being posted. Short recommendations, similarly, generated immediate and significant declines in price. This has been going on for decades [with] good old fashioned phone calls and ICQ messages.

The role of the Internet as a platform for collective action grows A survey released this week by the Pew Research Center’s Internet and Life Project shed light on the social side of the Internet. The results offered insight into the differences between the connected and the disconnected, revealing that Internet users are more likely to be active participants, with some 80 percent of Internet users participating in groups, compared with 56 percent of non-Internet users. These findings confirm the impact of the the Internet on collective action, observed Beth Noveck, NYU law professor and former deputy CTO for open government at the White House. “Internet users are more active participants in groups and are more likely to feel pride and a sense of accomplishment.” “Technology may not be the corrosive force that Putnam imagined in American life,” wrote Jared Keller in The Atlantic. “We have historically overestimated the value of access to information and underestimated the value of access to one another,” said Shirky.

Intentional Collaboration: The Mechanics of Learning to Learn Together | TalentCulture Originally posted by Chris Jones, a TalentCulture contributing writer. He is an IT Strategy & Change Management consultant, with a passion for driving new levels of engagement and learning in the modern organization. His research areas include the dynamics of organization culture, and more recently, the importance and implications of critical thinking. Check out his blog, Driving Innovation in a Complex World, for more. In our increasingly complex world, the compelling need for strong leadership and resilience to “clear the path” for change is evident. It’s a core message from Chip and Dan Heath’s “Switch“ that resonates with pretty much everyone in the corporate world. These ideas are not new. It’s just getting harder and harder to survive without a strong, hardened competitive edge, an edge sharpened by effective collaboration. The ability of an organization to solve its hardest problems lies deep in its inner workings. Surely there’s an application for this? Image Credit: Pixabay
