The concept of imagining an object and having it materialize in front of you has defined the term “futuristic” for a long time; however, the future is rapidly approaching. The introduction of 3D printing has just begun to transform the market behind the scenes, but three-dimensional manufacturing is on the cusp of a full-on breakthrough. Within the next few years, 3D printers will be more affordable and more widespread, and they will change the process of running a business forever. Small-Scale Production While the price tag on a 3D printer is still out of range for many businesses, in the next few years they will only become more available and more affordable. This means that at some point in the not-too-distant future, smaller businesses or even individual entrepreneurs could be turning their ideas into three dimensional objects with ease. Expect an explosion of handy inventions and patents within the next five to ten years because of this.

Infographic Of The Day: The Mega Companies Behind 90% Of Media We all know that everything you see on TV, and much of what you read online, is ultimately owned by a few mega corporations. But if you were pressed about how much those companies actually own, I’d bet you’d be off by about a factor of 2. Frugal Dad--the same company behind that Walmart infographic we did recently--took it upon themselves to show exactly how concentrated our media landscape actually is. Michael Harvey’s Life of Letters I have known Michael Harvey, the British book jacket designer / lettercutter / type designer, for nearly thirty years. And I have known his work for far longer, having first discovered it in Erik Lindegren’s ABC of Lettering and Printing Types (Askim, Sweden: Erik Lindegren Grafisk Studio, 1964–1965, 3 vols.) when I was a teenager. There his typeface Zephyr, done for Ludlow at the dusk of the metal era, was displayed along with a hand lettered greeting card. In the early 1980s I stumbled upon a number of Michael’s handlettered book jackets while preparing an anthology of such things (which never came to pass).

How Walt Disney Used His Kansas City Library Card “Animated Cartoons – How They Are Made Their Origin And Development” by E.G. Lutz 1920 (U.S. printing Charles Scribner’s Sons) When the word “Disney” is mentioned, it’s almost impossible to separate it from the craft of motion picture cartoons. Whether it’s used to describe a multinational entertainment corporation, or it alludes to Walt Disney the man, it’s easily synonymus with the technique of film animation. This was obviously not always the case. In 1920, animated cartoons were well known and part of a growing and thriving movie industry, but this is also when the 19 year old Walt Disney was just beginning as a cartoon filmmaker in Kansas City, Missouri.
