Design Ideas and Tech Concepts - Toxel.com ThankThank Notes Coroflot - Design Jobs & Portfolios Impressive Website Footer Designs for your Inspiration Footers are often an afterthought in blog design. Footers on web pages have evolved from being a simple section where you host your copyright information and additional links, to a multi-functional section where you can find a variety of site features such as a short bio of the author, and secondary navigation. It’s interesting to find out how designers prioritize their footer. 9194 Views CulturePOP | Ingredients for an Artful Life Many people say that "The Wire" was the greatest show ever written, with the possible exception of "Breaking Bad." Seth MacFarlane even pokes fun at the series’ reputation in an episode of "Family Guy." Since there is no definitive test to determine which is actually the greatest, I'd say a reference in an American, pop culture-themed sitcom provides some credibility. Although each of these elite TV drama series have completely different stories, they all have at least one thing in common. Yes, the other shows are original television projects, and “GoT” is an adaptation, but adapting for the screen is a whole different art form unto itself. What also allows this show to be so unique is the highly chaotic and orderless world it takes place in. With half of the Starks gone, Geoffrey still in power, and Daenerys' newly acquired army after only three seasons, fans can smell chaos lurking in the seasons to come.

Inside Jonathan Safran Foer's "Unmakeable" Interactive Book | Co.Design Author Jonathan Safran Foer has been called many things: literary wunderkind, conscientious vegetarian, pretentious dweeb. (OK, that last one was just me.) Now, with his latest book Tree of Codes, he may earn another label: book design genius. The book is actually a kind of interactive paper-sculpture: Foer and his collaborators at Die Keure in Belgium took the pages of another book, Bruno Schulz's The Street of Crocodiles, and literally carved a brand new story out of them using a die-cut technique. According to Foer's publisher Visual Editions, Tree of Codes was turned down by every printer they approached: "Their stock line [was], 'the book you want to make just cannot be made'." Luckily, the printers at Die Keure decided to prove their competition wrong and took the project on. The luscious results, designed by Sara de Bondt, will fly in the face of anyone who says that physical books are passé. You can see more pictures of the Tree of Codes on Visual Editions's Flickr stream.

Freeform Wooden Pavilion Structurally Biomimicks Sea Urchin's Form ICD/ITKE University of Stuttgart /via The concept of biomimicry is simple: it’s design innovation that’s inspired by nature, which can show up anywhere from buildings to products. And what you get may be a surprising departure from the usual, like this beautiful wooden pavilion that takes structural cues from the sea urchin, while also transforming a public space. Created as a joint effort in biological research between University of Stuttgart’s Institute for Computational Design (ICD) and the Institute of Building Structures and Structural Design (ITKE), the so-called “bionic” dome is constructed out of plywood sheets at 6.5 millimeters thick. Modelled on the biological principles of a sea urchin’s plate skeleton, the idea was to study and then emulate this biological form using advanced computer-based design and simulations. Objectified: A Documentary Film by Gary Hustwit Electrolux Molds Vacuum Cleaners Out of Ocean Trash | Co.Design You've probably heard about those gigantic islands of plastic trash that accumulate out in the middle of the ocean. But what do we do about them? If you're Electrolux, you send some ships out to gather up the stuff and use it to make chic, eco-friendly vacuum cleaners. Yup, you read that right: designer home appliances made from salvaged trash. The designers cut the salvaged plastic into strips, punched out circular tokens and fused them to a fiberglass weave shaped like the vacuum cleaner. Not every design is as eye-poppingly loud as the North Sea model. Since it's rather difficult to source this trash, Electrolux won't be making these models available for mass production and purchase.
