Rio+20 - United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development UN Photo/Martine Perret What is Rio+20? Rio+20 - the short name for the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development to take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in June 2012 - is an historic opportunity to define pathways to a safer, more equitable, cleaner, greener and more prosperous world for all. Twenty years after the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio, where countries adopted Agenda 21 - a blueprint to rethink economic growth, advance social equity and ensure environmental protection - the UN is again bringing together governments, international institutions and major groups to agree on a range of smart measures that can reduce poverty while promoting decent jobs, clean energy and a more sustainable and fair use of resources. About the Rio+20 Conference Themes of the Conference The Conference will focus on two themes: (a) a green economy in the context of sustainable development poverty eradication; and (b) the institutional framework for sustainable development. Seven priority areas

Rio: Imagineering the future 14 June 2012Last updated at 04:31 ET In recent years the Technology, Education and Design (TED) gatherings have attempted to position themselves as the modern world's imaginarium, giving people a view of what's possible when you unleash creativity. So given the huge issues facing humanity in terms of sustainability, I was interested to see what thoughts the TEDx event on the fringes of the Rio+20 summit might provide. Organisers laid on a two-day thinkfest in Forte de Copacabana, a former military base at the southern end of this most famous of beaches that (rather fittingly given its use today) saw rebellion against the established order in 1922. On the way in, we were invited to sample a number of artistic installations on themes of humanity, biodiversity and sustainability - presenting the problems, you could say, in a more graphical way than the dry reports in which the bad news usually arrives. Jean-Michel Cousteau Now, you don't find them there anymore, he said. Will the slabs survive?

Corporate responsibility - Bain & Company - Corporate responsibility Corporate social responsibility is entwined in Bain's DNA because our people believe deeply in making the world a better place. And because we share our experiences with our clients around the world, the benefits of our efforts—like our work with community organizations or our certification as a CarbonNeutral® company—are magnified far beyond Bain itself. Since the spring of 2012, Bain has been formally certified as a 100% CarbonNeutral® company across its global operations. We have chosen to pursue higher-than-required standards by offsetting all of our emissions, including client travel and other "tier 3" emissions. This achievement is the result of an exhaustive effort to measure our global footprint in accordance with international certification standards, coupled with a multifaceted approach to reach net zero carbon emissions. We have been aggressively reducing our footprint where we can. Reduction remains a priority.
