Climate Change Deeply complex, the climate system drives wind, water, and warmth around our beautiful blue planet, nurturing all life. But now our climate is changing fast. The cause is an old, broken energy system that pollutes our air and water, drives inequality and destroys priceless landscapes. We really have to change; we have only a limited time to act. 5 Fun Geography Games for Geography Awareness Week On each of the previous three days I've shared some resources and ideas for Geography Awareness Week. New South Wales drought now affects entire state Media playback is unsupported on your device Australia's most populous state, New South Wales (NSW), is now entirely in drought, officials have confirmed. A dry winter has intensified what has been called the worst drought in living memory in parts of eastern Australia. NSW produces about a quarter of Australia's agricultural output. It was officially listed as "100% in drought" on Wednesday.

Crayon Rocks We've had a very, very warm winter here in Michigan. With such little snow, the ground has been exposed and my little rock hounds have been collecting rocks again. I thought we'd revisit the types of rocks again (sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous) - but this time give them a more active and visual way to think about how each are formed. There are many examples of creating rocks from crayons, but this pdf from the the Exploratorium is very helpful. How Australia's extreme heat might be here to stay Media playback is unsupported on your device A section of highway connecting Sydney and Melbourne started to melt. Bats fell dead from the trees, struck down by the heat. On the northern Great Barrier Reef, 99% of baby green sea turtles, a species whose sex is determined by temperature, were found to be female.

US carbon emissions fell 10% in 2020 The crisis sparked by the coronavirus pandemic caused US emissions to drop by 10.3% last year, according to preliminary estimates by the Rhodium Group, a private data analytics firm. That is the single biggest drop in annual emissions in the post-World War II era, the group said. By comparison, the 2009 economic recession caused emissions to drop 6.3%. Carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases trap solar radiation in the atmosphere, just like the glass traps heat in a greenhouse. This causes temperatures to rise and drives more extreme weather, ice melt, sea level rise and ocean acidification.
