Setting up a home firewall with iptables on a Raspberry Pi Although the Raspberry Pi 3 was recently announced, the Raspberry Pi 2 still has plenty of life and is more than suitable for many interesting and useful tasks. I have a few Raspberry Pis sitting around that I've been exploring for other interesting projects, one of which is the possibility of replacing a very old single-core 64-bit Intel rackmount server that I use for the primary firewall and router on the edge of my network. But before I disrupt the main firewall and gateway for my network, I wanted to test the Pi a bit and see just what it would take to make this happen. Replacing a tower I also have a dual-core Intel tower that I use as a firewall and side door to my network. This computer is extreme overkill for that task, and I can definitely use it in a more appropriate role. Power supply I used Raspberry Pi 2 Model B, but a Raspberry Pi 3 should also work. KVM switch I have several of my infrastructure hosts connected to a 16-port KVM switch with VGA and PS/2 inputs. Date and time

Old Laptop Screen Into Monitor : 6 Steps In this section, I'll just say some words about this magic piece of hardware. First things first: I'm really wanted to show how you can build this board using micro-controllers, like Arduino for instance, so you can build and modify it yourself. I really wanted to add an light sensor that adjust the screen brightness according to the ambient light... But I can't. I don't know how it works, for each type LCD model, you have a different set of instructions, so for each one its a different firmware... But, now, what YOU need to do: 1) Look at the LCD panel, find the model number; 2) Buy* an Controller Board that meets your LCD model (and you will probably need an power supply that meets the controller board specification); 2.1) If you make your own board: Congratulations! *I'd recommend to buy the controller board + power supply from this e-bay store: Why? But you can buy from anyone else or do it yourself!

Turn your old Raspberry Pi into an automatic backup server If you're one of those people upgrading to the Raspberry Pi 3, you might wonder what to do with your old, lesser Pi. Aside from turning it into an array of blinking LEDs to entertain your cat, you might consider configuring it as a microcontroller. Making backups of our digital lives is, as most of us begrudgingly admit, the most important thing of daily computing that none of us bother to do. That's because going through the backup process requires us to remember to do it, it takes effort, and it takes time. And that's precisely why the best backup solution is the solution that you don't do at all; it's the one you automate. Such a system is best when it's always on, running in the background. rdiff-backup First, you need to choose some backup software to have your backup server (your Pi) and your clients (your laptop, desktop, and whatever else) run. Server install You don't need any special setup to turn your Raspberry Pi into a backup server. Client install The big hard drive Auto login

How To Convert Your Old Laptop Screen Into An External Monitor | Slashdigit Every good thing comes to an end, but that doesn’t have to be true with your old or damaged laptop. Yes, your laptop is dead, but you can still salvage some vital components, the LCD screen is a good place to start. Not all of us are good with tools, but it shouldn’t be too great a challenge to successfully take out your old laptop screen in a few steps. All you have to do is take out the front bezel by loosening the screws and removing snaps. What’s a bezel? The inverter converts direct current coming from the motherboard into alternating current and then passes it onto the LCD screen. Now to the business end of this DIY project. Step 1: Do some shopping The removed LCD cannot function as an external monitor alone. The package you will receive should contain the main controller board, a keyboard, and an inverter. You will also get three cables, the LVDS cable which connects the controller board to the LCD screen, the keyboard cable and the inverter cable. Step 2: Connecting the Cables

Armbian – Linux for ARM development boards Hardware Projekte – Chip Tester (English) – 8Bit-Museum.de Unfortunately, such a tester cannot be produced at an acceptable price, a real tester will always be a compromise between the detection rate of defective chips and the price. The Retro Chip Tester Professional is able to identify defective memory cells very reliably. A memory card can even be used to precisely determine the defective memory cells. In addition, the Retro Chip Tester has many other useful functions for repairing retro hardware. The RCT can save the contents of ROMs, PROMs and EPROMs to a memory card. If you are interested, I am happy to give you a board pre-assembled with the ATmega2560 at cost price (⇒contact form). The Rev.1 of the completely revised Retro Chip Tester (formerly „SRAM/DRAM memory tester“) does not longer use the switches which were present in Rev.8. The firmware has since been expanded considerably. Comparison lists with the supported memory chips can be downloaded above. 30-pin SIMM and SIPP modules (via a simple adapter) can be tested.

Raspberry Pi Zero: the $5 computer Of all the things we do at Raspberry Pi, driving down the cost of computer hardware remains one of the most important. Even in the developed world, a programmable computer is a luxury item for a lot of people, and every extra dollar that we ask someone to spend decreases the chance that they’ll choose to get involved. Private Video on VimeoJoin the web’s most supportive community of creators and get high-quality tools for hosting, sharing, and streaming videos in gorgeous HD with no ads. The original Raspberry Pi Model B and its successors put a programmable computer within reach of anyone with $20-35 to spend. Four fathers!?!?? Today, I’m pleased to be able to announce the immediate availability of Raspberry Pi Zero, made in Wales and priced at just $5. Raspberry Pi Zero runs Raspbian and all your favourite applications, including Scratch, Minecraft and Sonic Pi. MagPi #40 in all its glory Happy hacking!
