Graphic: a complete guide to the medal records of every country at every Olympic Games Now that London 2012 has come to an end, there is ample opportunity to reflect on what has been Great Britain's largest medal haul for more than 100 years. Team GB won 29 golds at these Olympics and our graphic lets you see how that compares with every other Olympiad, including less fruitful Games such as Atlanta 1996 and Montreal 1976, as well as the unassailable heights of London 1908, where Britain won more than half the golds available. The graphic, which allows you to sort by sport, by Games and by nation, also shows that Britain did not have a stellar Olympics in every respect, with our total of three swimming medals being half the total won in the sport in Beijing. There is also an at-a-glance breakdown by sport of the performances of every country - from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe - at each of the 30 Games to date. You can examine, too, the rise of Jamaican athletics, from three silvers and a bronze to four golds at Barcelona 1992, four silvers and four bronzes in London.

The World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-INFRA) said that India, China, and Japan are the world's largest newspaper markets with paid circulations of 110 million, 109 million, and 50 million, respectively. Combined, these three countries' circulations make up more than half of the world's total percentage of paid circulation. Moreover, 67 of the world's 100 largest daily newspapers are based in Asia, reports Asia 360°. These figures represent a stark contrast to the steep decline in newspaper print circulation in the United States and Europe. The U.S. experienced a loss of 17 percent over the same five-year period from 2006 to 2010, according to the WAN-INFRA 2011 report. In the developed markets, users have been turning to the free Internet for their news. Trend to Trust?

MANIFESTO CLUB • BANNED IN LONDON This map of London shows the dramatic loss of liberty in public space. In total, there are 435 banned zones in London, within which citizens can be punished for activities that would otherwise be perfectly legal. Together these zones make up around half the area of the capital, and some areas are overlapped by two or three different zones. Zones are not generally marked with signs, but when you cross these invisible lines your normal freedoms are suspended; you can be punished for things which are not, outside of the zone, an offence. Within a dog exclusion zone, you can be fined or prosecuted just for walking your dog. Within a no-leafleting zone, you can be fined or prosecuted for handing out leaflets without a licence. In short, these zones criminalise perfectly normal and otherwise legal activities – walking a dog, handing out leaflets, protesting, or just being in a particular area. This map is part of the Manifesto Club’s ‘Pavement Injustice’ campaign, against on-the-spot fines.

(c) SEOWizz Like this:

Mode Media Interactive: Mapping the World's Friendships Technology bridges distance and borders. Individuals today can keep in touch with their friends and family in completely new ways — regardless of where they live. We explored these international connections through Facebook and found some trends — some predictable, some wholly unexpected, and some still inexplicable. Who can explain the strong link between the Democratic Republic of Congo, one of the poorest countries in the heart of Africa, and Ecuador? The reason the Central African Republic might be good friends with Kazakhstan is likewise mysterious to us. But as we did a little research, some unusual connections become surprisingly clear. Immigration is one of the strongest links that seems to bind these Facebook neighbors, as thousands of people pour over borders or over seas, seeking jobs or fleeing violence, and making new connections and maintaining old friendships along the way.
