23 Free, Web-Based Tools SMBs Are Asking for Now This post originally appeared on the American Express OPEN Forum, where Mashable regularly contributes articles about leveraging social media and technology in small business. In an informal Twitter poll, we asked our friends working at or running small and medium-sized businesses not what they could do for the Internet, but what the Internet could do for them. We heard responses that ranged widely, running the gamut from social media marketing tools to internal team communications. Here's a list of great resources for SMBs that meet some of the most pressing needs you experience as a business owner or entrepreneur. Best of all, every single one of these tools can be used free of charge (some have paid options for larger businesses or for those that need more features). And all of them are web-based; that means you won't have to install software, worry about cross-platform compatibility, take up any of your own system's resources or have to leave work when you leave your own PC.

Facebook now allows pages to make ‘unpublished’ posts to test creative options Facebook now allows pages to make ‘unpublished’ posts to test creative options Facebook recently added an option for pages to make “unpublished” posts through the Pages API. Unpublished posts, also known as “dark posts,” do not appear on a page’s Timeline or in fans’ News Feeds, but they can be promoted with ads. Facebook ad and page management platforms can integrate this feature to help page owners test different creative options. Previously, page owners using the self-serve ad tool or Ads API could not run page-post ads without creating a post that would also show up in fans’ feeds. The feature might also be useful for testing copy for potential posts. Premium advertisers — those working directly with Facebook to run ads on the homepage — have had the option to make page-post ads without publishing them to their page since February if not earlier. Hat tip to David Turner, of PageLever, for pointing out this addition to the Pages API. Sponsored Post

E-Commerce Is Head Over Heels for Pinterest, and for Good Reason - Tricia Duryee - Commerce No one knows for sure what social commerce will be in the future, but it’s starting to look a lot like Pinterest. Based on a report shared exclusively with AllThingsD, Pinterest is on pace to become the most significant driver of social traffic to e-commerce sites by the end of the year — besting more mature networks like Facebook or Twitter. “If you aren’t doing it, you are falling behind, and you need to do it as quickly as possible,” said Kurt Heinemann, the chief marketing officer for Monetate, referring to Pinterest. ”It is absolutely justified.” The report was compiled by Monetate, which helps its clients — including Best Buy, Urban Outfitters, Aeropostale, The Sports Authority, OfficeMax and others — maximize their marketing strategies. While the report comes from a single source, Monetate can get a good sense of overall trends because of its large client base. Heinemann said all of the attention and hype around the company is entirely justified, especially for retailers.
