seesaw. I was just in NYC and I'm sad to have missed The Americano in Chelsea. The interior, designed by MCH, is as lovely as the menu. Airbnb CEO: The future is about access, not ownership For decades now, folks in America have generally prized the idea of ownership — and the more expensive and permanent the asset, the better. Owning a home and buying a car are seen as major, almost mandatory milestones in many people’s lives. But according to Airbnb co-founder and CEO Brian Chesky, as the world’s population gets larger and technology makes us more connected, the adulation of ownership is slowly starting to wane. “We have an ownership society now, but we’re moving toward an access society, where you’re not defined by the things you own but by the experiences you have,” Chesky said in an onstage interview at the GigaOM RoadMap conference in San Francisco on Thursday. And naturally, Chesky pointed out that his company Airbnb, an online marketplace which lets people rent out their apartments and homes, is well-positioned for this new world. Of course, giving people this kind of intimate access to the hard-earned assets of others comes with its dangers. Photo by Pinar Ozger.

Make It Do - The sustainable is about time Upon hearing about this project, my friend @finn sent me a link to Bruce Sterling’s The Last Viridian Note. There’s a lot in there that resonates, especially his definition of sustainability: “So basically, the sustainable is about time – time and space. You need to re-think your relationship to material possessions in terms of things that occupy your time.” One thing I’ve found freeing already is how much extra time I seem to have because I’m not shopping, or needing to shop. Granted I also haven’t bought groceries in a month because my husband’s been doing that! Since we moved into our current home nearly three years ago, I’ve been a fairly disciplined purger, going through our belongings and giving away what we no longer need or use. [O]bjects can damage you personally. I’m sensing a process of curating my goods lies somewhere in this project.

The Last Viridian Note By Bruce Sterling Recent events have clearly established that the character of the times has changed. The Viridian Design Movement was founded in distant 1999. After the years transpiring – various disasters, wars, financial collapses and a major change in political tone – the world has become a different place. It remains only to close the Viridian episode gracefully, and to conclude with a few meditative suggestions. As I explained in the first Viridian speech, any design movement – social movements of any kind, really – should be designed with an explicit expiration date. Some Viridian principles can be lightly re-phrased, buffed-up and likely made of practical use in days to come. I'm following current events with keen interest. I would like to cordially thank Viridian readers and contributors and advisors for their patience and their generous help over nine years. I can't say what Viridian may have done for you; that's up to you to judge. What is "sustainability?" That era is dying.

Can't get no satisfaction: Why service companies can't keep their promises Service companies can’t show customers a tangible product. Since services are intangible, the only way to sell them is by making a promise to perform. But most service companies fail to keep their promises, leaving customers frustrated, confused and abused. Why do so many service companies fail to keep their promises to customers? Customers have become accustomed to being abused by the companies they buy services from. Fewer than 1 in 10 customers say companies are exceeding their service expectations. The most hated companies, and the most hated industries, are service providers: Consider your last experience with your telephone, cable or satellite provider; your utility provider; your airline; or your bank. The customer support decision tree. When customers are dissatisfied, there are only two possible outcomes. Consider what happens when you focus on costs in your customer service operations: The cheapest customer support call is the one that doesn’t happen at all. How do they do it?

To Increase Sustainable Consumption, Show People What’s In It For Them This year at the World Economic Forum (WEF) meeting in Davos, the concept of sustainable consumption took center stage. In partnership with Accenture, the WEF just released its report, "More With Less," which accurately pinpoints the systemic triggers, barriers and urgent need for action inherent in this necessary transition. At face value, sustainable consumption seems counterintuitive to growth, but the report identifies the extraordinary competitive and economic opportunities for businesses, whether catalyzed by resource scarcity, population growth, the burgeoning middle class, or changing consumer values. An area where there is still work to do, however, is the "how." The good news is that there are ripples of profound innovation coming from the private sector, as companies recognize sustainable consumption is not only necessary given the finite resources available on our planet. The market for these strategies is there.

Or maybe you want to present something different... Perhaps your home reveals your crowded schedule, numerous commitments, the lack of time or focus you have available to put everything in order. Do you want to wake up in a room you love? Do you smile when you walk room to room, or do you groan and wish things were different? You can love your space. It CAN be an environment that restores, motivates, inspires you to be all you can be, to tackle your day. When you hire us to make the turn around you desire- all things become possible. We know we feel better when there are systems of order.
