Best Publisher Pages on Facebook - mediabistro.com: GalleyCat Facebook counted 500 million users today, prompting us to finally create a GalleyCat Facebook page. Stop by and say hello–we will use the new site for event listings, literary contests, and publishing debate. Discovering the keyword “publishing” turns up 17,000 pages, we realized that we can’t navigate this sea of content alone.

Doctor uses liposuction fat to power car A BEVERLY Hills cosmetic surgeon is boosting his green credentials by running his car on biofuel ... made from his patients' fat, sucked out by liposuction. Dr Alan Bittner claims to be saving the planet by using fat removed from clients in liposuction surgery to power his 4WD. According to Dr Bittner, his patients are more than happy to be involved in the extraordinary eco-friendly scheme. "The vast majority of my patients request that I use their fat for fuel and I have more fat than I can use," he said. US authorities are less impressed and have launched an inquiry into his claims that he is converting the waste fat into bio-diesel or "lipodiesel" as he calls it. Dr Bittner posted his claims on a website lipodiesel.com, which has since been taken down following the sudden closure of his clinic on Rodeo Drive. He is believed to have moved to South America after patients filed a lawsuit for allegedly allowing his unlicensed girlfriend to carry out operations.

Millennials Won't Change Work; Work Will Change Millennials - Andrew McAfee by Andrew McAfee | 8:57 AM July 26, 2010 There’s a lot of writing these days around the entry of Generation Y, or the Millennials, into the workforce. We hear how different they are than us older knowledge workers, how much they’re going to shake up offices and organizations, and how much companies need to change to accommodate these messengers from the future. As a 60 Minutes story put it, “A new breed of American worker is about to attack everything you hold sacred…” As I listen to these discussions I’m reminded of a conversation I had a while back with a friend who published magazines (remember them?). “How the workforce is being shaken up by its youngest members” is another article in this category, though not for bridal mags. If all these articles were accurate, we would have witnessed almost nonstop convulsions in the workplace over the past sixty years, and knowledge work environments that look nothing like they did a few generations ago. What do you think?

How publishers are using aggregation, curation platforms Advertisement It's nothing new that many news websites augment their own content with repackaged content from around the Web, but the applications have evolved along with the technology. Content providers are experimenting with all sorts of ways for editors and technology to push outside content to readers, whether through aggregation or curation (for a lengthy discussion about the difference, check out the Nieman Journalism Lab). While publishers choose to utilize aggregation and curation platforms in a variety of ways, the main point is clear: Many media companies see benefits in collecting content from around the Web. Publishers find curation can attract and retain readers by offering the best of all content, rather than the best of just their own content. Here are a few ways publishers are deploying these platforms to add to their site's content: Topic hubs Topical pages have gone beyond story lists, pulling in interactive content both inside and outside of news organizations.

Wins New Legal Protections for Video Artists, Cell Phone Jailbreakers, and Unlockers San Francisco - The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) won three critical exemptions to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) anticircumvention provisions today, carving out new legal protections for consumers who modify their cell phones and artists who remix videos — people who, until now, could have been sued for their non-infringing or fair use activities. "By granting all of EFF's applications, the Copyright Office and Librarian of Congress have taken three important steps today to mitigate some of the harms caused by the DMCA," said Jennifer Granick, EFF's Civil Liberties Director. "We are thrilled to have helped free jailbreakers, unlockers and vidders from this law's overbroad reach." The exemptions were granted as part of a statutorily prescribed rulemaking process, conducted every three years to mitigate the danger the DMCA poses to legitimate, non-infringing uses of copyrighted materials. The Afghanistan War Logs Released by Wikileaks, the World's First Stateless News Organization July 26, 2010 The Afghanistan War Logs Released by Wikileaks, the World's First Stateless News Organization "In media history up to now, the press is free to report on what the powerful wish to keep secret because the laws of a given nation protect it. But Wikileaks is able to report on what the powerful wish to keep secret because the logic of the Internet permits it. Wikileaks.org: Afghan War Diary, 2004-2010Der Spiegel: Explosive Leaks Provide Image of War from Those Fighting It New York Times: The War Logs The Guardian: The Afghanistan War Logs From my internal notebook and Twitter feed, a few notes on this development: 1. “It’s counterintuitive,” he said then. 2. This leak will harm national security. 3. He is the operation’s prime mover, and it is fair to say that WikiLeaks exists wherever he does. 4. Appealing to national traditions of fair play in the conduct of news reporting misunderstands what Wikileaks is about: the release of information without regard for national interest.
