Peace and Conflict Studies The research-oriented Master’s programme in International Studies/Peace and Conflict Studies is offered jointly by Goethe Universität Frankfurt and Technische Universität Darmstadt in co-operation with the Peace Research Institute Frankfurt. The study programme takes a socio-scientific approach and offers theoretical and normative knowledge at the junction between peace and conflict research, international relations, political theory and philosophy, and applies this knowledge to the current problems of regional and global order. Students are made familiar with theoretically based and normatively founded perspectives on national, trans-national and global socialisation processes and acquire the ability to undertake a differentiated analysis of conflicts within and between states, as well as a considered development of strategies to settle conflicts and promote peace. Students take part in a research placement where they will carry out the research themselves.

The act extended the territorial application of the initial embargo to apply to foreign companies trading with Cuba, and penalized foreign companies allegedly "trafficking" in property formerly owned by U.S. citizens but confiscated by Cuba after the Cuban revolution. The act also covers property formerly owned by Cubans who have since become U.S. citizens.[1] The law was passed on March 12, 1996 by the 104th United States Congress. The bill, which had been tabled in late 1995 after Senator Helms was unable to overcome several Democratic filibusters, was reintroduced prompted by an episode that happened a month earlier.

United States and the International Criminal Court Author and Page information The U.S. opposed the ICC from the beginning, surprising and disappointing many people. Human rights organizations and social justice groups around the world, and from within the US, were very critical of the U.S. stance given its dominance in world affairs. The U.S. did eventually signed up to the ICC just before the December 2000 deadline to ensure that it would be a State Party that could participate in decision-making about how the Court works. However,

Seeking Domestic Help The Role of Domestic Criminal Law in Legitimizing the Work of International Criminal Tribunals Yuval Shany* ↵* Hersch Lauterpacht Chair in Public International Law, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Exploring International Criminal Law’s Reluctance to Resort to Modalities of Group Responsibility Five Challenges to International Prosecutions and their Impact on Broader Forms of Responsibility Abstract In recent years, some prominent scholars of international criminal law have reacted to the phenomenon of collective perpetration of international crimes by advocating for a more collective-orientated jurisprudence in international criminal law. The fact remains, however, that international criminal law still strongly adheres to the concept of individual responsibility, surprisingly more so than many domestic common law and civil law jurisdictions. This article explores the deeply rooted differences between domestic and international criminal law, which hinder the quest for adoption of modalities of group responsibility in international criminal law.

Models of Judicial Cooperation with Ad Hoc Tribunals and with the Permanent International Criminal Court in Europe This contribution deals with the legal problems (and dilemmas) arising in the field of judicial cooperation between States and international criminal justice systems (especially the ad hoc Tribunals and the International Criminal Court). Fundamental rights are easily in danger when judicial cooperation in criminal matters is involved, regardless of the model of cooperation adopted. The problem of fundamental rights violation is especially evident at international level. It can be summarized as follows. On the one side, any international justice system needs the active help from States and international organizations in order to effectively enforce its own criminal system. On the other side, States and international institutions, whose cooperation is crucial, are out of control of the issuing jurisdiction.
