Six Amazing Websites that Make Your Writing Stronger Long writing activities are not very frequently done in class. I tend to think that my students are like me; I need the right kind of atmosphere. Writing requires time, silence and lots of inspiration. Ideally, at this time of the year, I would probably wish to be sitting next to a fireplace with the most perfect instagrammable snow falling outside my window while drinking a nice cup of coffee waiting for inspiration to strike. Unfortunately, there isn’t any snow where I live so I’ll have to make do with a bit of rain and some reddish trees. Inspiration, the most important word when writing and something my students claim to lack. These are some great sites that can help you make your writing stronger. Photo by Tekke 1. Skell is easy to use. 2.Netspeak is a really helpful site to help you write better. You can find the word(s) you’re looking for by typing signs as seen in the picture below. Type ?

on incorporating comic strips into your curriculum... school hasn't started yet in our house, but the kids have been hankering for some structure and creativity. so after googling "comic strip templates" and printing up a bunch from this site, (click to link) i spent some time explaining story structure i plunking down the ever present jar-o-markers and turned them loose. and four hours later, i had to force them to stop for a snack before they immediately went back to drawing - FOR ANOTHER TWO HOURS! and since they woke up clamouring for more - i bit the bullet and designed them some very specific templates. feel free to click and take for your kids. okay, take a crack at it - print a bunch of them up and cross your fingers that your kids will like them as much as mine have... because if they do - enjoy your nap-billpaying-manicuring-reading-yogaing-whatever-you-do sort of break. so sad. no one ever warned me about the getting back to life after the massive road trip. who knew?! (hanging head in shame)

7 Easy Ways to Support Student Writing in Any Content Area More teachers are being asked to support student literacy in all content areas. For those trained in English language arts, this isn’t a big deal. But if you have spent your career learning best practices in science, social studies, physical education, music, math, or one of many other content areas, the idea of “teaching” students how to write on top of covering your own content may seem impossible. Good news: It’s not all that complicated, and it doesn’t have to be time-consuming, either. You can get this information by reading the cheat sheet above, listening to the 28-minute podcast, or reading the full transcript. Then tell me what you think in the comments section below.

Grade 7 Paragraph – The Canswedian English Teacher “Scaffold learning” – one of those hot button words in teaching. I got on the scaffold-their-learning train with this assignment which builds each year in högstadiet. The irony is though… that in Grade 8 when you say, “Do you remember how I taught you how to write a paragraph in Grade 7?” you will be met with a sea of blank and confused faces. I teach them first how to write a paragraph in 7, then in 8 they write a three paragraph essay on their hero, then in 9 they write a five paragraph essay on the change in character in About A Boy. A lot of you might argue my way of teaching a paragraph, but please feel free to do it in whatever way you are comfortable with. Personally, I teach it in parts, and really focus on the formatting, and feedback process. I do this because I found it so hard to write an essay when I got into high school – and it wasn’t until a teacher explained that it was like a math formula (just plug in the sentences in the right spot) that I finally got the hang of it.

Anna's wet day out Find a picture of the hero of your story in a magazine or on the internet, big enough for your teaching situation.
