How Valuable Is Your Roof? Put It Up For Solar Auction Your most overlooked piece asset, your roof, is now a hot market. A new firm launching this month, Gridbid, allows homeowners to auction the solar installation rights to their roofs online. The company says solar installers can save as much as 80% of what what they normally spend to find roof-top space, while the average residential utility bill drops between 10 to 35%. Just because you want solar power (and you probably do, it’s starting to become the cheapest option in many states) doesn’t mean it’s easy to find a company to put panels on your roof. The idea, according to founder Thomas Kinshanko, CEO of parent company Habitat Enterprises, came after seeing all the inefficiencies that still plague the market for residential solar. Piloted this March, Gridbid says it auctioned more than $300,000 in rooftop solar projects during its first week online, helping building owners go solar, while some of the 4,000 or so solar installers in the US competed to install more panels.

For their annual Rethink issue, Icon Magazine asked the San Francisco-based studio Manual to do just that. The familiar green placards that currently flank our roads, Manual writes, are "confusing, inconsistent and messy." But the most radical components of Manual’s redesign can be found when you’re getting off the highway. Who Supplies Apple? (It’s Not Just China): An Interactive Map Last month, Apple Inc. released its updated list of suppliers (PDF). This report says it includes “the major manufacturing locations of suppliers who provide raw materials and components or perform final assembly on Apple.” ChinaFile used this data to construct the interactive map, above. The Cupertino-based firm has been publishing annual supplier responsibility reports annually for the past seven years. But this is only the second time that Apple has released detailed addresses of their suppliers. Apple first revealed a list of its top suppliers in 2012, when it also joined the Fair Labor Association, allowing independent audits of the company’s suppliers. Neither China watchers nor Apple watchers will be particularly surprised to note that the vast majority of Apple suppliers happen to be in Asia.
