An occasion for dispensing confetti doesn’t present itself too often, so why not do it with appropriate aplomb? As if we didn’t already know that black-and-white, bold graphics, and a dash of sparkle are a surefire route to a memorably festive visual statement, along come these confetti poppers—a DIY project — Continue reading Talk about a gem of a DIY project! This shimmering, beautifully faceted holiday ornament, which we discovered on the unfailingly industrious site, A Beautiful Mess, was fashioned at home with the help of standard craft staples: balsa wood, X-Acto knife, gold paint—and, yes, a dose of motivation which (we admit) — Continue reading We were immediately struck by the moody prettiness of this Christmas tree, only to find that we were fooled by a terrific home-made optical illusion—and the most artful no-fuss tree we’ve seen in a while. Tell me…what do you see when you look at this post? Got a piece of furniture you don’t LOVE? We mean, you want a punch of color, sure.

Cozy Mix: Heavy Concrete Home, Flowing Green Roof Forms If Wright and Le Corbusier were around today they might just agree that this home is the best of both Modernist worlds – combining the free-flowing Prairie Style interpretations of the former and the hard and linear Bauhaus concrete forms of the latter. “Comfortable” and “concrete” rarely go together, but the balance out outward-looking, floor-to-ceiling windows, groomed landscape and surrounding forests help to offset the stark contemporary white, black and gray interiors. The whole structure sitting within a single story helps as well, making it feel more tied to the ground (and effect reinforced by green ramps and roofs). Whether or not A Cero directly borrowed these strategies from early Modernists is hard to say, but it seems to work regardless. Continue reading below Our Featured Videos So, would you feel at home in this house despite the extensive use of concrete, or is it still too minimalist for your tastes?

A Little Bite of Everything | An Ikea Rug Makeover UPDATE: I’ve added the stencil to DIY your own Moroccan rug in this other post. I love the dark wood floors we have in our home. The problem is that, since they are so dark, they show every little bit of dust, especially in the living room, which gets a lot of traffic. So I started looking for a rug but they were all so expensive, and didn’t really convince me. That’s when it hit me. What do you think? About Recycle This | How can I recycle this? This site started from a bowl of pistachio nut shells. After we gorged ourselves on their lovely innards, they, the shells, just sat there, looking useful and versatile – but we no idea what we could possibly do with them. Just throwing them on the compost heap seemed a waste – all the effort to make them tough and solid, and here we were just hoping they’d rot back down to mulch before the potatoes needed earthing up. When we thought about it, we were in the same position with lots of things: leftover bits of food, old household items, empty containers of all shapes and sizes… And so this site was born. Four years on, we’ve covered over 900 items and had over 14,000 suggestions of ways to reuse, repurpose or recycle things that would otherwise go in the bin. We aim to add new content every weekday – if you have any ideas for items or would like to make/repair something, suggest them to us – all suggestions gratefully received.

Falling Water, Revisited: Modern Green Pool-Cooled Home The Frank Lloyd Wright home featuring a flow-through waterfall may be the most recognizable residential design in modern history, but for all of its innovations its construction was extremely costly, not to mention the subsequent renovations required to hold its structure together over time. If that was the prototype for integrating moving water into houses, then this design may be one of the best executions of a contemporary, environmentally-integrated approach. Starting with water-shadow patterns cast upon the entry path, this overly austere minimalist structure is merely a backdrop for the complex interplay of architecture and water that defines this house from top to bottom, inside and out. Like the name of the firm itself (Wallflower – photos by Albert Lim), the building is almost secondary, a foil for natural processes, views and the actions that take place within it rather than a work of art in and of itself. Felt Ogee Ornament Tutorial I woke up this morning with an image in my head of a felt snowflake. So I asked my kids to make a few traditional fold and cut paper snowflakes for me before they left for school. I wanted to use them as templates for my idea. …it worked! Step 1: Cut one 6″x 6″ square of felt. Step 2: Using a straight edge and an Xacto knife, cut along the first line from the corner to about 1/4″ from the diagonal line. Repeat until all cuts have been made, keeping the felt intact at each corner on the diagonal line. Step 3: Lift the corners of the center square and hand stitch the ends together with matching thread. Step 4: Turn the piece over and lift the corners of the second square. Step 5: Continue turning the piece over, overlapping points and stitching until all 4 squares are stitched. Step 6: Create a hanging loop at one end with a clear monofilament thread. This makes a large ornament, about 10″ in total length. Felt projects inspired by paper projects is a natural.

Paper beads I made these paper beads a while ago and dug them out the other day for my eldest son to play with. At three and a half he’s grown out of playing with his chunky threading beads – so these were the perfect replacement. They are so easy to make and surprisingly sturdy. I used some sheets of origami paper to make mine but you can use any kind of paper. To make them simply cut out some very long isosceles triangles. You can experiment with paper length/width and make beads of different shapes and sizes. The beads are perfect for little kids to thread.

Huge-Plot House Made of Multiple Modular Mini-Home Plans Taking layout lessons from the mistakes of unplanned city development, this multi-unit housing complex is a unique attempt to combine genuine community spaces with private residences – custom-planned apartments with shared green space but room to breath as well, all on large plot of land. There is an organic way in which urban density leads to developments that may never have been designed for those living within them – from accidental single-family home-to-apartment adaptations to intentional but cookie-cutter stacked modular housing situations. In India, Anagram Architects (images by Asim Waqif) has anticipated the paradigm and designed something to respond in advance of inevitable suburban sprawl on the edge of a major city. Like Frank Gehry’s now-infamous home remodel of his house in Santa Monica, this project truly looks like the conclusion of a set of experiments – design done over time – rather than a built-at-once piece of custom architecture.

Make coasters from curling ribbon | Chica and Jo Years ago when I was a college student, I had a part time job in a card store. One day on the job, I was fiddling with the curling ribbon we used for balloons. As I twisted and curled it in my fingers, I found myself rolling it into a tight spiral. As it grew and I added more colors, I soon realized I had a really cool design forming, and without too much effort I would have a spiral of color large enough to use as a coaster. Ever since then, whenever I get balloons or gifts that are tied with curling ribbon, I save the ribbon in a special box in my craft room. Selecting the ribbon You probably haven’t been saving up used curling ribbon from balloons and packages (not yet, anyway), so you might need to buy some new ribbon to start on this project. Winding the ribbon To start your coaster, just grab a piece of ribbon and roll the end up as tightly as you can. Now for the fun part. You can see a lot of potential fun here with patterns and colors. Coat the coasters or brush-on varieties.

All Things Thrifty Home Accessories and Decor Simply Vintagegirl Blog 6 March 2014 When I picked up a little book titled “Free Grace and Dying Love,” I couldn’t help but begin pouring over its pages. The first part is a collection of devotions by Susannah Spurgeon and the second part is a biography on her life. Charles and Susannah Spurgeon’s story is a beautiful and inspiring one. They came together as one and faithfully served and sacrificed much to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ and seek first His kingdom and righteousness. Susannah’s writings in the collection of devotions is beautiful evidence of her great love of and submission to her Savior. A couple of my favorite quotes from this volume: “Lord, You have told me who You are, You have in mercy revealed Yourself to me, I know You to be that blessed ‘gift of God’ which alone can save and satisfy my soul. I need Christ in all things and I know that He is sufficient.
