Multiplicity and Memory: Talking About Architecture with Peter Zumthor This interview was completely conducted and translated by Marco Masetti, done as his bachelor’s degree thesis in Italy. The idea of multiplicity is innate in Peter Zumthor’s projects since his very first works: works of art surrounding us put on various meanings, which do not always remain on parallel levels combining well with dialectical relationships. The vague is planned strictly, holding by the rules of the architectural language. Things determine the spatial dimension of the world, and therefore its knowledge and usability to us. For Zumthor there is a strong connection between reality and living. From emotion he passes on to remembrance and memory, which are the central threads in Zumthor’s research. «The world is overloaded of signs and information, representative of things – Zumthor wrote – that nobody completely understands, because they are in turn nothing but signs representative of other signs. Zumthor has never investigated the theme of the city. The interview can start.

10 Reasons You Should Never Throw Away Those Silica Gel Packets What Do Those Little Packets Do Anyway? Janine Ngai for LittleThings Silica gel packets are full of small grains of silicon dioxide in solid form. The technical name for it is silica xerogel, but most people just call it silica gel. It’s a desiccant, which means water molecules are drawn to it and out of whatever is surrounding the packet. That means they’re used to keep moisture, and thus mold, mildew, damage, odors, and staining, away from sensitive items. Silica gel is also used in cat litter, water filtration, and as an anti-caking agent in some foods. But you can also use it around the house! Use #1: Dry Out Your Phone Getting your phone wet is a major hassle, but it happens. To dry out the small openings and components quickly and thoroughly, drop your phone into a Ziploc bag with enough gel packets to cover it on both sides. Seal the bag and let sit for 24 hours. Use #2: Keep Jewelry Bright And Shiny Keep a silica gel packet in your jewelry box to keep moisture away from your jewelry.

AD Classics: House VI / Peter Eisenman - liam5 (63272) - ArchDaily AD Classics: House VI / Peter Eisenman Architects Location Cornwall, Connecticut Architect Peter Eisenman Client Mr. and Mrs. Richard Frank References Peter Eisenman, Houses of Cards. New York: Oxford University Press, 1987., and Frank, Suzanne. From the architect. Situated on a flat site in Cornwall, Connecticut House VI stands its own ground as a sculpture in its surroundings. Thus, the house became a study between the actual structure and architectural theory. The structure was incorporated into Eisenman's grid to convey the module that created the interior spaces with a series of planes that slipped through each other. Another curious aspect is an upside down staircase, the element which portrays the axis of the house and is painted red to draw attention. As annoying as the house was to inhabit, Eisenman was able to constantly remind the users of the architecture around them and how it affects their lives.

This post comes from our Australia contributor, Miann Scanlan. Follow along with her on Instagram @freepeopleaustralia! I used to think that caring for plants was simple. I remember childhood car trips with my father being somewhat of a tree-sighting adventure. Given my exposure to plants, one would think I’d be a bit of a green thumb. I love the calming energy that plants bring to my home. The Borrowed Nursery is run by Lauren and Lauren, two non-botanists by trade who are “just two girls who happen to be in the plant business”. I spoke to Lauren and Lauren about their top 5 tips for picking the perfect house plant: Consider your schedule If you are often out of town, choose plants that can survive a few weeks without watering, like jade or rubber plants, mini-geraniums, golden pathos, or any kind of philodendron. The Mainstream is Wrong. Banks Create Money out of Nothing. By Steve Keen I like Joe Stiglitz, both professionally and personally. His Globalization and its Discontents was virtually the only work by a Nobel Laureate economist that I cited favourably in my Debunking Economics, because he had the courage to challenge the professional orthodoxy on the “Washington Consensus”. But Joe’s latest public contribution—“The Great Malaise Continues” on Project Syndicate—simply echoes the mainstream on a crucial point that explains why the US economy is at stall speed, which the mainstream simply doesn’t get. Joe correctly notes that “the world faces a deficiency of aggregate demand”, and attributes this to both “growing inequality and a mindless wave of fiscal austerity”, neither of which I dispute. I’m the last one to defend banks, but here Joe is quite wrong: the banks have very good reasons not to “fulfill their purpose” today, because that purpose is not what Joe thinks it is.
