Common Core Connection : Reading Comprehension Passages and iPad Apps by Guided Reading Level Hi, Thanks so much for stopping by! As my sons were growing up, I started writing stories about the topics they were most interested in. For the past three years, I’ve been turning these into a series of Leveled Reading Comprehension Passages with text-based questions. These passages are currently available for Guided Reading Levels C - N. If you'd like to see teachers' feedback on the reading comprehension passages (paper version), click here. My son, Keith, has been studying Computer Science and is now an iOS app developer. We currently have apps listed for Guided Reading Levels C, D, E, F, G/H and I/J. Students can read the passages on their own, or can click a speaker button to hear sections of text read. If you’d like to see these apps in the app store, click here or on either of the images above. Keith and I were thrilled when Binghamton University recently shared an article about our work. If you have any questions about these apps, please feel free to contact me.

Chicka Chicka Broome's Room: Daily 5 Listening Center Last year we had 'Daily 4' in my classroom because I simply couldn't afford a listening center! So this year I decided to buy some Walkmans and burn a few CD's. Welllll, 3 weeks later my Walkmans are broke, the batteries are running out quick, and all my CD's are scratched up!! So! #1: Find some good books in your classroom to be a part of your listening center. #2: Now, this is going to be embarrassing, and take little bit of practice, but it will save you tons of money. Tip: If you are using the same MP3's as me, you will want to say "Book 1: Stellaluna", "Book 2: Ms. #3: Now transfer all the recordings, in # order, to the MP3 players. Enjoy!!!

Reading Fluency with an App - Primary Flourish Hi Sweet Friends, I want to share a great way to help your students 'flourish' in their reading fluency - using technology! Reading fluency is an important building block in the development of a strong reader. Research shows that the more a passage is read, the more fluent the reader becomes. There are a many ways to motive students to do this repeated reading - Reader's TheaterPoetryChoral ReadingStudent-Adult ReadingPartner Reading(I'm sure you can think of more!) I want to share another way that I have found highly motivating to my students - using a recording app on a digital device. I was blessed with a class set of iTouches - so we use the build in recording app, but you can use any recording app that is on your device, or go the the app store to find one. He has created these for many grade levels, which makes it super easy to differentiate for our students' various reading levels. He has included a CD, so students are able to listen to the passage first. Happy Teaching!

Listening Center Ideas for 1st Grade - The Brown Bag Teacher Today I’m sharing about another component to the Daily 5 in our classroom – Listening to Reading. (I’ve shared about Read to Self/Partner and Word Work earlier in the year). This is going to be an all-in-one blog post, so….stick with me. No matter what technology you have available (CD players, iPods, iPads) I’m going to share ideas that will work for your classroom! Our Listening Center Using an inexpensive bookshelf from Target, we are able to keep all of our Listening to Reading supplies in one spot. All of our Listening to Reading books and CDs (from Scholastic) are stored on a shelf in the cabinet you see above. Each CD (after it’s loaded onto iTunes), is attached to the inside cover of each book. Making the Most of Limited Technology At the beginning of the year, we started our listening center with a 1990’s Sony Walkman and a Belkin Headphone Splitter that allowed 5 friends to listen at one time. Most of my CDs come from Scholastic Bonus Points. Using iPads for Listening to Reading

Laughing with Lane: Daily 5 + iPads = Serious Engagement and Motivation It's no surprise that I L.O.V.E technology especially my classroom set of iPads!! {Thank you Title 1!!!} This school year, I was asked to present at our districts Summer Institute about how I have integrated the use of iPads within the Daily 5 framework that I have come to adore! Listen to Reading Today I'm going to start with my favorite use of iPads for Listen to Reading. Video Tutorial For those of you that are like me and need to see it in action, I created a video tutorial that goes through the steps of creating the recording and the QR Code. Step by Step Directions STEP 1: There is a free website called Record MP3 that allows you to record ANYTHING you want. STEP 2: All you have to do is press RECORD. STEP 3: Then play it back and if you like it press SAVE RECORDING and if you don't press START OVER. STEP 4: From here you can either copy the link or save it to your computer. STEP 5: COPY the link, open a new table with a QR Code Generator. I hope this is useful for you!
