The scary truth about what's hurting our kids - Your Modern Family In the past week, I’ve read several studies that are scary to me… the scary truth about what’s hurting our kids. We all know that what our kids hear becomes their inner voice, but it’s hard to control what they hear from others, isn’t it? CNN recently interviewed Dr Jean Twenge, author of iGen and her interview really worried me – because I saw the truth that I would be facing in just a few short years. Dr. Twenge started doing research 25 years ago on generational differences, but when 2011 -2012 hit, she saw something that would scared her to the core. This is the year when those having iPhones went over the 50% mark.

Red sun phenomenon 'caused by Saharan dust', analysis shows Image copyright University of Nottingham Analysis of tiny particles has confirmed that dust blown over from the Sahara caused the sun and sky to appear red in many parts of England. Scientists at the University of Nottingham studied dust particles brought down in rainfall to determine the cause of Monday's phenomenon. The dust was dragged in from the Sahara by the remnants of Hurricane Ophelia. Dr Beth Steer collected samples from her car windscreen and put them under a scanning electron microscope.

Interactive Notebook Setup Before I started using interactive notebooks, I always wondered how other teachers set them up and got kids started. I’ve read on other blogs that some teachers take up to a week (!) to set them up. So, I thought I’d share what I did this year. I told kids at Open House that they would need a composition notebook by the second day of school. Red sun phenomenon 'caused by Hurricane Ophelia' Image copyright Colin Cradock An "unusual" reddish sky and red-looking sun have been reported across parts of England. The phenomenon has been seen in the South West, the Midlands, North West and North East. BBC weather presenter Simon King said it was due to the remnants of Hurricane Ophelia dragging in tropical air and dust from the Sahara. He added that debris from forest fires in Portugal and Spain was also playing a part. The dust has caused shorter wavelength blue light to be scattered, making it appear red.

Storm Ophelia: Town engulfed in foam as ex-hurricane sparks freak weather phenomenon Storm Ophelia has caused certain rare phenomena including a red sun and birds swirling mysteriously in the sky shortly before the category 1 storm hit. Pictures from Cleveleys, Lancashire, have shown another odd happening – an entire town covered in foam. Due to high winds and foam whipping off the sea, roads and buildings were covered with foam and made driving conditions difficult. The bizarre occurrence, around six km north of Blackpool, was documented as Ophelia raged over Ireland and the UK, making landfall in County Kerry in west Ireland early Monday morning and pummelling the country with gusts of wind up to 100 mph. Ophelia was a Category 3 storm as it intensified over the weekend, churning from the Azores across the Atlantic towards the UK.

Here are five ways you can bring that humor into your classroom (and school) to connect with students: 1. Class Rules, Expectations, and/or Procedures: Instead of your traditional class rules poster, use memes to deliver your message with humor. Better yet, have students create what they think proper rules and regulations should be. In memes, of course. EdTech Trends: Meme Lesson Ideas Discovering new ways to engage students is a challenge for teachers in all disciplines. One way to keep students interested is to make connections to the real world. A meme is a popular way for people of all ages to send a message that demonstrates a nuanced understanding of a particular event. In the social studies classroom, educators can use memes as teaching tools and projects for their students. Dictionary.com defines a meme as “a cultural item in the form of an image, video, phrase, etc., that is spread via the Internet and often altered in a creative or humorous way.” Even if your students haven’t used the word meme in conversation, they’ve most likely seen memes spread on social media or sent via email or text message.
