Missing money? IRS has $760 million in unclaimed refunds NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — The IRS is holding onto nearly $760 million in unclaimed tax refunds that will soon become the property of the U.S. government if taxpayers don’t collect it. The money belongs to 918,600 taxpayers who still haven’t filed their 2010 tax returns, the IRS said Tuesday. If you’re among this group, you must file your 2010 return by April 15 in order to collect your refund. Otherwise, the IRS gets to keep it. “The window is quickly closing,” IRS commissioner John Koskinen said in a statement. People who earn so little that they aren’t required to file a tax return often miss out on big refunds. The agency estimates that half of the unclaimed refunds total more than $571. Taxpayers in Alaska, Connecticut, Illinois, New Jersey, New York, Washington, West Virginia and Wyoming are missing out on the most money — with unclaimed refunds in those states topping a median of $620.
Obama Bypasses Congress to Foist “Imperialist” Tax Plot on World As part of a fiendish effort known as FATCA supposedly aimed at extracting an extra billion or so dollars from U.S. taxpayers each year, the Obama administration is bypassing Congress to impose a far-reaching new tax regime on the world, and domestically on the United States. Experts and analysts say the scheme could destabilize the U.S. financial system and potentially even spark another economic crisis due partly to executive-branch mandates on American banks; yet the IRS and the U.S. Treasury are moving full-speed ahead in spite of major concerns raised by lawmakers and others over their authority to do so. Critics are referring to the whole plot as “fiscal imperialism.” Among other schemes, the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act, or FATCA for short, seeks to coerce financial institutions and governments all over the world into becoming de facto extensions of the IRS. It will also turn U.S. banks and the IRS into agents of foreign tax collectors if the administration gets its way.

The state is sitting on 13 tons of plutonium from Hanford, Wash., Rocky Flats, Colo., and other sites, as well as from the Savannah River Site, according to the S.C. Sierra Club. South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley announced yesterday that the state is suing the Department of Energy over the project. The disposal of the plutonium is a part of a long-standing nuclear proliferation treaty with Russia. The Obama Administration says that the project is being abandoned because it is behind schedule and over budget, with a total estimated cost of $30 billion. EDITORIAL: The Star-Spangled ban Old Glory just can’t catch a break in the courts. Judges have said you can do anything with the American flag, burn it, step on it, spit on it. Twenty-five years ago the Supreme Court upheld the First Amendment right of the “Revolutionary Communist Youth Brigade” to set fire to a stolen flag as an expression of free speech. Last week, an appellate court in San Francisco (naturally) decided that kids can’t wear a T-shirt with the Stars and Stripes on it lest it offend someone. The 9th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals concluded that administrators at Live Oak High School outside San Jose were right to punish a handful of students who wore American flag clothing on Cinco de Mayo, a day when many Mexican immigrants celebrate Mexican pride. Rather than deal with violent students, he cracked down on those who had committed no crime. The threatened students sued, saying their First Amendment rights were infringed. This is about more than political correctness run amok.

Common Core gets AWFUL review in new study | Bad news for supporters of national education curriculum: States with education standards most closely aligned to Common Core fared worse on math tests than states with their own standards, according to a new study. The study, conducted by the Brookings Institution, compared standardized test scores for all 50 states over the last five years. It found that states using education standards that are most dissimilar to Common Core tended to score the highest on math. Though the difference is small, it nevertheless undermines the claims of Common Core’s high profile backers, which include President Obama’s Department of Education, several moderate Republican governors, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. “Supporters of Common Core argue that strong, effective standards will sweep away such skepticism by producing lasting, significant gains in student learning,” wrote the study’s authors.
