What are the best 'learn to draw' books available Betty Edwards Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, as cited above. Also Kimon Nicolaides's The Natural Way to Draw. Both are exactly and essentially about making marks, and there is a whole corpus of knowledge about conveying information visually. That is why a lot of people suggest John Buscema's How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way. Many people swear by Burne Hogarth's Dynamic series -- Dynamic Figure Drawing, Dynamic Anatomy, Dynamic Light and Shade. George Bridgeman, like Nikolaides, was an important New York Drawing teacher in the early twentieth century. When I was a kid I used to own a book called Drawing the Head and Figure by Jack Hamm. Now three web sites. For the basic human figure try the Figure Drawing Lab. For perspective and composition check out its sister site: Both are academic sites, obviously, connected to the University of Evansville.
PS.
