Lärandematriser; synliggör lärandet i handling A collection of lesson plans | elt-resourceful Over the last few months I have been writing lesson plans for the British Council Teaching English site. Here is a collection of links. All materials are free to use. Is Slavery a Thing of the Past? [click on the lesson title for lesson plan and materials] Designed to raise awareness of the UN’s World Day against Trafficking in Persons, this lesson begins by asking students to consider what they know about the issue, then takes them through a process of learning more before concluding by asking them about what they have learnt, and how their understanding might have changed. The lesson involves plenty of speaking, a vocabulary focus, which pre-teaches topic related vocabulary later found in the text, a jigsaw reading and a focus on passives. Unsung Heroes [click on the lesson title for lesson plan and materials] This lesson, devised for International Women’s Day, will help to raise awareness of some not very famous, but nonetheless important, women.

The 5 Priorities of Classroom Management For beginning teachers, or for teachers like myself returning to teaching, the most difficult thing to master is classroom management. I had to relearn what ten years of hard instruction had taught me: Good classroom management is more than just being strict or authoritarian, and it is more than simply being organized. If I want to have my classroom run smoothly as a well-oiled learning machine, I have to set up a structured learning environment in which certain behaviors are promoted and others are discouraged. I have discovered that there are five components of effective classroom management that establish structures strong enough to entice and motivate student learning: Developing effective working relationships with students Training students on how learning takes place in your classroom Protecting and leveraging time Anticipating student behaviors in well-written lesson plans Establishing standards of behavior that promote student learning 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 10 Outstanding Websites for English Teachers - WeAreTeachers As a high school English teacher, I’m always using outside websites and resources. After all, if it helps my students and gets them excited about English, then I’m happy to try it. These are my best websites for English teachers. 1. Teaching Tolerance is “a place where educators who care about diversity, equity and justice can find news, suggestions, conversation and support.” 2. With the slogan “Meet your next favorite book,” Goodreads is a bit of technological wonder for readers. 3. So much more than just a place to catch cheaters, although it is very good at that. 4. Whether your students need clarification on grammar, style or proper citations, this site can help. 5. Handouts for virtually every writing issue your students could come across. 6. Let’s be honest: None of us really loves teaching grammar. 7. I just started using this one, and it is awesome. 8. This may be my favorite site for teaching students how to write and revise. 9. “Publish your passions, your way.” 10. 11. 12.

Mrs. Brosseau's Binder: How Google Forms Saved This Teacher's Sanity I’m writing this tutorial as I sit at my kitchen island, eating a scone and drinking a coffee. I know what you’re thinking – this teacher has time to sit down?! Oh yeah, sit, eat and have a coffee. Here’s my secret. I’m an idealist. “Be careful not to use first person when writing a lab report.” x 5 “How could you rephrase your headline to catch the reader’s attention?” “Refer back to the success criteria to be sure you are meeting all of the expectations.” x infinity My hands were sore and I was tired. I was bringing home so many projects to mark because they just took so long to mark I couldn’t get them all done at school. I played with trying to solve this problem with some programming in Excel, and debated getting out my old programming books, but the answer was much more obvious: Google Forms. If I could put all the typical feedback comments into a Google Form I could just check the ones that apply to the student’s work. Now we need to set up docAppender. There you have it!

Larry Ferlazzo - Online tools These include The Best Web Tools For English Language Learners (In Other Words, The Ones My Students Regularly Use) and The Best Beginner, Intermediate & Advanced English Language Learner Sites. Now, though, I think it's time to narrow them down to my choices for the "best of the best" or, in other words, an "All-Time Best" list. Here are my choices, and I hope readers will let me know if they agree, disagree, and/or think I've missed some (one key requirement is that they are all free to use). Obviously, The British Council has tons of great resources. I'm obviously biased, but I think the weekly student interactives I create for The New York Times are very useful to English Language Learners. The Reading and Everyday Life activities from GCF LearnFree are excellent. ESL-Bits has good exercised for Intermediate English Language Learners. Kiz Klub has many simple interactive books to read with audio support for the text. Mrs. Duolingo has got to be number one in this category.
