Please, Come In! 3 Activities to Start Off the Course on the Right Foot Ahh almost October! How are we here already? I can’t even wrap my head around the idea that this is going to be my 27th year teaching English. I know, I know. Anyway, a new school year, new students, a fresh start, a clean slate. So, the plan for the first day is the one below. Activity 1. We will start the course playing a Kahoot to revise some of the content studied in the previous course. If you ask students to play in pairs or in threes, you’ll just need a device for each group. This is the link in case you want to use my Kahoot. Activity 2. (I know! Can’t think of questions to ask? Idea for the post inspired by Post-it.com Activity 3. This activity is just so much fun. I ask students to write on one side I HAVE and, on the other side, I HAVE NEVER. For example. In the picture below, you can see Julio, the German teacher, and me exemplifying the possible answers (sorry, as I said, classes have not started yet and I had to bribe a colleague). The Seven Best Silent Short Films for Language Teaching - Kieran Donaghy As many short films are artistic, they have limited appeal in the commercial marketplace and are funded from diverse sources. To make them easier to sell worldwide, they often contain little or no dialogue, which makes comprehension much easier. As a result, they offer intensely ‘filmic’ experiences, using images and movement, sequence and duration, sound and music to tell their stories. These silent films are perfect for the language classroom as they can be used with any level – the teacher just needs to adapt the difficulty of the task to match the level of the students. Here are the seven short films which I have found work best in the language classroom. Your Secret Your Secret is a wonderful short film by Jean-Sebastian Monzani. You can watch the film below and find a full lesson plan here. Your secret from Jean-Sebastien Monzani on Vimeo. Taking Pictures Taking Pictures is a simple but beautiful short animated film by Simon Taylor. Moments MOMENTOS from Nuno Rocha on Vimeo. Amar Five

ndla Why So Much Variety in English? (Fagstoff, 03.08.2015) Variety in English When you start listening to the examples of English we have prepared, you might ask ... English we have prepared, you might ask yourself why there is so much variety in English. There's not just one answer. ESL warm-up activities and time fillers – more than 30 fun ways to start a class Warm-up activities play a crucial role in the English language classroom. Students often arrive to class feeling tired or preoccupied, making it important to gently transition them into the learning environment rather than diving straight into challenging grammar or vocabulary tasks. A well-designed warm-up can engage students, sparking their interest and encouraging active participation. It can also serve as a review of previously taught material or as an introduction to a new topic. Additionally, these warm-up activities can double as go-to fillers for those moments when your lesson plan wraps up early or unexpected issues arise, ensuring a seamless classroom experience for both you and your adult learners. The great thing about the activities on this page is that they all require no preparation at all. Teaching Online We have an accompanying online-focused website LearnHip where you will discover lots more online activities which work well as warmers and fillers. Quick questions Hangman
