IN A RUSH? FORGET THE BRUSH!

IN A RUSH? FORGET THE BRUSH!
photos: Angela Kohler + thebeautydepartment.com post designed by kristin ess In a world where we can’t stop running late, the fun bun is probably the quickest way from A to Chic. This look comes in über-handy when you wake up late and you’re rushing out the door (or even if you have plenty of time). Step 1: If your hair is straight, use a 1″ curling iron to curl everything under. Step 2: Flip your hair over and gather everything into a ponytail on top of you head, securing it with an elastic ponytail holder. Step 3: On the last time around with the ponytail holder, only pull the ponytail through half way. Step 4: Take the loop you’ve created and spread it out. Step 5: Take the tail end and wrap it around the ponytail base. Step 6: Pin the end of the ponytail to the base using a couple of hair pins/bobby pins. Step 7: Gently pull on pieces and then pin them. Step 8: Spray a veil of medium hold hairspray all over. Enjoy the fun bun! XX Kristin Ess Related posts:

Dial V for Vintage: How To Use A Hair Donut Do you remember the hair donut I made a while ago? I thought I'd share this little 'tutorial' with you on how to use it (some of you asked how it's used)! It doesn't take long and it's an easy way to get a quick hairdo that looks like it involved a lot of time and effort. I must admit I am not a hero when it comes to making fancy hairdos, but this donut made it much easier for me. You can make it any way you like, messy or not. First, this is what you need: A hair donut, two elastic hairbands, bobby pins, a flower (or bow or whatever you like), hairspray. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. ... and pull it over like this, over the hairdonut. 6. 7. 8. I hope this was helpful!

Messy bun tutorial (Coat by French Connection) After this post, I got a few requests for a “messy bun” hair tutorial! My boyfriend laughed when I told him that I needed help photographing it. It is a bit unintuitive – a process for making your hair “messier.” That said, this method will probably have to be tailored to fit your individual hair type; it even took me a few tries to photograph and post this tutorial properly, as sometimes it turns out better than others. Nonetheless, I thought I’d oblige those who asked! (Crew neck sweater by J.Crew) FYI, this hairstyle is considerably more difficult on freshly-cleaned, slick hair – it’s much easier to style if it’s a little dirty. Now on to the tutorial! More in-depth explanation: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. I feel like I should rename this blog to “Hairstyles for lazy people and art students”, because this is seriously the PERFECT way to wear your hair if you are like me and don’t wash your hair daily. CHALK IT UP photos: Kristin Ess, post designed by Kristin Ess Last week, we were shooting Lauren’s collection for Kohl’s and at the end of the day, we got our hands on some colorful soft chalks. How can a girl resist when there are pinks + purples involved?? Lauren’s pink cotton candy bun was pretty cute! As you may know, hair chalking has been around for a little while now and it’s a great way to temporarily add color to your locks. Twist the hair as you chalk. Try doing 2 colors on one strand! The best part about chalking is styling it. The colors we used for this post were:

Operation Organize: The Necklace Nightmare Dealing with tangled necklaces can be totally frustrating. It bothers me to think about all of the necklaces I’ve had to pass up due to impossible knots. Thankfully, there are lots of easy yet creative ways to keep your necklaces organized and tangle free. Why hide your pretty pearls away in a jewelry box when they should be seen? The solution? Here are a few of my favorite necklace storage solutions (you might recognize a few from my book, Style): Crystal Knobs: Grab a handful of pretty glass knobs (I especially like the ones from Anthropologie) and install them into a wall that needs a little eye candy.
