Tears For Fears Pale Shelter extended version Ambient music Ambient music includes forms of music that put an emphasis on tone and atmosphere over traditional musical structure or rhythm. Ambient music is said to evoke an "atmospheric", "visual"[2] or "unobtrusive" quality.[3] To quote one pioneer, Brian Eno, "Ambient Music must be able to accommodate many levels of listening attention without enforcing one in particular; it must be as ignorable as it is interesting."[4] As a genre it originated in the United Kingdom at a time when new sound-making devices such as the synthesizer, were being introduced to a wider market. History[edit] As a genre, ambient music usually focuses on creating a mood or atmosphere through synthesizers and timbral qualities. Ambient did not achieve large commercial success, being criticized as having a "boring" and "over-intellectual" sound.[5] Nevertheless, it has also attained a certain degree of acclaim throughout the years. Eno has acknowledged the influence of Erik Satie and John Cage. 1990s developments[edit]

Curtis Mayfield We are the People Darker Than Blue A Love Supreme A Love Supreme is a studio album recorded by John Coltrane's quartet in December 1964[1] and released by Impulse! Records in February 1965. It is generally considered to be among Coltrane's greatest works, as it melded the hard bop sensibilities of his early career with the free jazz style he adopted later. The quartet recorded the album in one session on December 9, 1964, at the Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. Music[edit] Coltrane's classic quartet was completed with the addition of percussionist Elvin Jones, who performs various non-traditional instruments on A Love Supreme The album begins with the bang of a gong (tam-tam), followed by cymbal washes. In the final movement, Coltrane performs what he calls a "musical narration" (Lewis Porter describes it as a "wordless 'recitation'")[4] of a devotional poem he included in the liner notes. Reception and influence[edit] Other performances[edit] Archie Shepp, who played on the sextet versions of Acknowledgement Side one
