Elle a fait ses débuts professionnels en 1991, des débuts d’ailleurs fracassants, à l’âge de vingt et un ans. Elle est apparue au sein d’un trio entre punk et blues, où elle campait un personnage de jeune sauvageonne rurale, solitaire, emplie de désarroi et de colère. Depuis, elle a suivi toute une série de transformations, on pourrait dire de métamorphoses. Au fil des années, elle a voulu donner dans ses chansons sa voix à tout ce qui la traverse et lui semble plus vaste que sa petite personne : l’histoire de son pays, le spectacle d’une civilisation en perdition. Seamus Murphy & PJ Harvey’s Poetic Collaboration From "The Hollow of the Hand" by PJ Harvey and Seamus Murphy, Bloomsbury, 2015. © Seamus Murphy A new book, The Hollow of the Hand, combines Seamus Murphy’s photographs and singer/songwriter PJ Harvey’s poems. Murphy made many of the photos in the book while he and Harvey traveled together to Kosovo, Afghanistan and Washington, DC, between 2011 and 2014. The Hollow of the Hand (published by Bloomsbury) is not Murphy’s first poetry book. We contacted Murphy at home in London to ask him what it’s like to work with poets. Harvey suggested working together on a project from start to finish after Murphy completed the films for the songs on “Let England Shake.” Explaining their decision to go to Washington, D.C., Murphy says, “It is the center of Western power, and Afghanistan’s and Kosovo’s histories and fate was determined very much by things that happened in Washington.” Avoiding the obvious was his goal when he edited images for the book. The book is being released in the U.S. this week.
