5 Cool, Luxurious (and Inexpensive) Hostels Mention the word “hostel” and most people recoil in horror, perhaps haunted by memories of dirty dorms, queues for the bathroom and rowdy backpackers. But hostels have transformed in recent years into some of the best value accommodation around, offering the same comfortable rooms and range of facilities you’d expect in a hotel. As the credit crunch bites and travelers cut back on their holidays, this couldn’t be a more timely transformation—why pay the high room rates of hotel chains when you can get the same standard in a hostel? Forget the standard youth and backpacker hostel, the term now covers a huge range of lodgings, from guesthouses to beachside apartments (you can even find hostels in tree-houses and old castles these days!). Many hostels now boast private rooms with ensuite bathrooms, widescreen TVs and even a Jacuzzi if you’re lucky! Here is a look to the five most luxurious hostels out there: Naples, Italy La Controra Flashpackers Hostel Lisbon, Portugal Living Lounge Hostel Stay

Decadent cultures of sex spread in NK <img src=' Sexual promiscuity has spread in North Korea involving prostitution, adultery, and the making and selling of pornography, according to a news report Sunday. Although the North regime had thoroughly controlled people’s private lives until the 1990s, this social phenomenon has been rampant with the regime’s power decreasing due to economic difficulties. “A growing number of women have rushed into prostitution to earn decent money to make a living and for luxuries,” said a close source to North Korea affairs quoting a defector who once lived in North Hamgyeong Province. “Some female students entered into prostitution to purchase cell phones.” As the act of adultery has become popular, the new term “8ㆍ3 husband and wife,” meaning unlawful relationships, has been created. “In several big cities, there are bars where women put on strip shows for government officials,” said another source. It is also reported that there have appeared experts who have been making and selling pornographic movies.

Culture in humans and apes has the same evolutionary roots Culture is not a trait that is unique to humans. By studying orangutan populations, a team of researchers headed by anthropologist Michael Krützen from the University of Zurich has demonstrated that great apes also have the ability to learn socially and pass them down through a great many generations. The researchers provide the first evidence that culture in humans and great apes has the same evolutionary roots, thus answering the contentious question as to whether variation in behavioral patterns in orangutans are culturally driven, or caused by genetic factors and environmental influences. In humans, behavioral innovations are usually passed down culturally from one generation to the next through social learning. For many, the existence of culture in humans is the key adaptation that sets us apart from animals. Whether culture is unique to humans or has deeper evolutionary roots, however, remains one of the unsolved questions in science. Largest dataset for any great ape species

The 30 Best Films of the Decade We’re all in that humanistic mode of evaluating our lives – coming up on the end of the year and the last time a zero will be the third digit on our calendars. We’re all (from Variety to Cat Fancy) also waxing expert on what films were the best of the best of the best of the past ten years. Which is why there is an unnavigable sea of opinion polluting the internet right now. Neil and I thought, ‘If everyone else is doing it, why can’t we? You may ask (since I’m forcing you to rhetorically), “How can giving your opinion be better than everyone else’s tepid version of an almost-arbitrary-seeming list?” I’m glad you asked. Neil and I anticipated this task back in October and began planning what would become far too much work for two people who essentially sit around watching Animal House all day. The algorithm, which we’ve nicknamed Simon, spat out just over 300 films, reducing our master list by 90%. After 6 cutting sessions and over 4 hours of arguing, we’d chopped the list down to 60.

Be lucky - it's an easy skill to learn Take the case of chance opportunities. Lucky people consistently encounter such opportunities, whereas unlucky people do not. I carried out a simple experiment to discover whether this was due to differences in their ability to spot such opportunities. I gave both lucky and unlucky people a newspaper, and asked them to look through it and tell me how many photographs were inside. For fun, I placed a second large message halfway through the newspaper: "Stop counting. Personality tests revealed that unlucky people are generally much more tense than lucky people, and research has shown that anxiety disrupts people's ability to notice the unexpected. The experiment was then repeated with a second group of people, who were offered a large financial reward for accurately watching the centre dot, creating more anxiety. And so it is with luck - unlucky people miss chance opportunities because they are too focused on looking for something else.
