Open source Graphic Design
How to work as a Graphic Designer without sleeping with Adobe I am just now completing a certificate in graphic design at the online school Sessions.edu, and although I have come to like the Adobe Creative suite tool (and mainly inDesign), I would rather be relying only on open source tools. Why? If you want to read more about open source and creativity, I invite you to read FLOSS+Art which is a solid explanation of the relationship between open source and creativity/art. “FLOSS+Art critically reflects on the growing relationship between Free Software ideology, open content and digital art. This book has been a strong inspiration for me to embrace open source in all my creative projects. Using open source instead of a licensed software is quite empowering and freeing. + Free software – meaning you don’t pay for it (you still can donate what you want!) There is a quality and peace of mind when using open source software that is hard to explain. Photoshop replacement with GIMP

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last 2 years, you’ve most likely heard of the of the OP-1 (that is, if you follow new audio device and synth development). Following up on last week’s post about mO, we’ll take it a notch further today by adding a MIDI controller to our code. Learning electronic music has been a more complex task than initially planned. In short, Minecraft is pointless. This is a repost from lightwaves since I would like to continue writing about my creative process, and lightwaves is not getting published anymore. Finally after 2 years of talk and desires and excitement the OP-1 has been shipped to me.

This might really surprise you, but your basic motivation for ZigZag, took me until now to meaningfully grasp. Hey, this is profound! We believe this is the most general data structure, able to replace tables, arrays, spreadsheet and relational database, and intrinsically offering built-in visualizations and hands-on controls. That structure we call zzstructure, or hyperthogonal structure. A hyperthogonal cluster of cells. All connections are orthogonal,as in a conventional table.Note that this is only one possible visualizationof this cluster.

Sketching in Code: the Magic of Prototyping Over the last year, I’ve noticed more and more conversations about prototyping as a method of approaching web application development. Beyond casual conversations, prototyping has also increasingly been the topic of blog posts or subject matter for conference presentations. The reasons for this increased interest include a laundry list of benefits that prototyping can bring to the process of developing compelling web applications. Ranging from increased collaboration to more effective solutions, these benefits have made prototyping a valuable new approach to consider for your next project. Wireframes: square peg, round hole#section1 One of the obvious developments in the web application world that has made prototyping approaches more attractive has been the rise of Ajax and rich internet applications (RIAs). With the rise of Ajax however, wireframes started to come up short. Prototyping is the magic#section2 Prototypes keep us focused on our actual goal. The inevitable caveats#section5

Nelson - Nightly 1 Preliminary remarks Science is supposedly about universals. Yet much of "computer science" is about the ramifications of two conventions: the simulation of hierarchy and the simulation of paper, carefully developed in a variety of directions. Even Web-style hypertext is the simulation of paper and hierarchy: specifically, the Web is simulated paper (composed rectangular arrangements of fonted text), often in hierarchical structures (hierarchical URLs) which in turn are often exposed hierarchical directories on their servers. Text files are generally a form of paper simulation. "Programming languages", too, are often deeply married to paper simulation. To my way of thinking, the great disadvantages of these traditions are hardly recognized, and so few alternatives have been considered. I propose an alternative cosmology that appears to be radically different in every aspect. 1.1 Starting over I propose to go back to the beginning and branch in another direction. hierarchy is optional.

Style Tiles: The Flip Side of Wireframes Style Tiles: The Flip Side of Wireframes Style Tiles provide a fresh and productive way to approach the design process. They allow you to specifically hone in and focus on a project’s personality and mood without worrying about specific layout decisions. Today we’re going to show you exactly what Style Tiles are, why you should use them and how to incorporate them into your design process. What Are Style Tiles? Style Tiles are a way to develop a site’s visual identity independent of the complicated logistics that come into play when actually trying to develop a full fledged mockup. Rather than beating around the bush, let’s jump right into what a Style Tile looks like. If you’re driven by visual design, then you should immediately be able to see the usefulness of this tool. The Flip Side of Wireframes The Style Tiles website describes them as a something in between a mood board, which is too vague, and a full mockup, which is too precise. Three Reasons To Use Style Tiles Let’s Make One Logo

Neil Freeman – fake is the new real - Nightly A Short Guide To Open-Source And Similar Licenses Advertisement Many developers and designers want to release their work into the world as open-source projects. They want others to be able to build on and share their code. The open-source community is vibrant because of this. Open-source software is available for virtually any application you could think of. Most designers use open-source software or code on a regular basis (WordPress, Drupal and many other CMS’ are open source). But many developers and designers don’t have a clear picture of what the different open-source licenses really mean. What Is Licensing? A lot of confusion is out there about what exactly licensing means. Licensing is a great alternative to just releasing your work into the public domain or granting permissions on a case-by-case basis. Open-source licenses2 make it easy for others to contribute to a project without having to seek special permission. GNU General Public License Copy the software. Dancehall Dancehall is a genre of Jamaican popular music that originated in the late 1970s.[1] Initially dancehall was a more sparse version of reggae than the roots style, which had dominated much of the 1970s.[2][3] In the mid-1980s, digital instrumentation became more prevalent, changing the sound considerably, with digital dancehall (or "ragga") becoming increasingly characterized by faster rhythms. (The word "bashment", a term originating in the 90's, was used to describe a particularly good dance; for example "to go to a bashment dance". In the Dancehall vernacular, 'bashment' is therefore an adjective instead of a noun.) History[edit] Two of the biggest deejay stars of the early dancehall era, Yellowman and Eek-a-Mouse, chose humour rather than violence. Dancehall brought a new generation of producers; Junjo Lawes, Linval Thompson, Gussie Clarke and Jah Thomas took over from the producers who had dominated in the 1970s.[5] Digital dancehall and ragga[edit] Conscious ragga[edit] Donna P.
