Teaching Students How to Conduct Inquiry-Driven Research | Evan Scherr If we knew what it was we were doing, it would not be called research, would it?- Albert Einstein Teaching Students How to Conduct Inquiry-Driven Research It always starts with a question. Most of the time there is a simple answer to that question. What time does the store open? But a lot of times our questions don’t have an easy answer to them. Technology that is used to support meaningful learning that engages and facilitates deeper levels of thinking does not include using technology as delivery vehicles (Jonassen, 2011). Supports knowledge construction for both representing learner’s ideas, understandings and beliefs as well as for producing organized, multimedia knowledge bases by the learner. Is a vehicle that supports the exploration of knowledge by supporting and constructing information to compare perspectives, beliefs, and worldviews. The virtual library commons should connect students to the tools that they need to see their way through the research process. Bring It In, Don’t Send Them Out A big shift is happening in how we can build access to web resources. Providing Context The virtual library learning commons puts this diverse array of resources, tools and strategies into the ethical context of academic honesty and good digital citizenship. Fostering Learning So far we’ve talked about the information flow from the library to the student. Instructional Alignment Over the past few years, I have seen many great examples of teachers and teacher-librarians using interactive web technologies to extend the classroom online. Just in Time Learning The virtual learning commons can be a hub not only for virtual classrooms and resources, but also be the virtual “anchor chart” centre. Be the Hub
